Privacy needed for a tall narrow area (*pics!*) FL9a

Hello everyone,

Great forum - I've been lurking for a while and I know many of you are experienced gardeners who will be able to help. I'd love to get your input on how to gain some privacy in a tight corner of my backyard.

Here is some background:

Wonderful neighbors, they are gardeners and very active in their backyard and make a lot of use of their lanai (cook dinner there most nights, etc.). Their lanai is on the back corner of their home and completely overlooks my entire backyard. The fence is entirely mine and I have 5.5 feet between my house and the fence, their house is smaller so they have 10+ feet from the other side of the fence to their house.

I'd rather not use a trellis in this spot because 1) don't want to be obvious about blocking their view of my yard (they'd likely be offended) and 2) it would have to be a big trellis and then making repairs to the fence, etc. might be a hassle.

I need to be careful about not blocking my "side yard" - it is my only access to the front yard from the back (only this side has a gate).

These photos were taken in the early evening, but it's actually a very sunny spot. That side of the fence is facing North and the back of my house (looking into the conservation area) faces West. Drainage is excellent.Yard is 40 feet deep and 60 feet wide. Don't mind the pavers - they're for the dogs and will be covered by low plantings in front of them.

Whatever I plant will become the back of a deep border (only 1/2 of the backyard will be grass).

I was thinking maybe Giant Bird of Paradise? Do they grow fast enough? What about Black Bamboo? They clump, but do they bend over or stand straight and tall? Maybe Bottlebrush trees? They might get too wide though, and I hear nothing grows under them...true?

I'm a new gardener, so I appreciate the input!

Now to the pics...

The front, while still a work in progress, looks pretty good...

But the back - oh my!

The view straight out the back of the lanai is of a nice conservation area...

But as you can see, my neighbor's lanai overlooks our entire backyard...

Another view, you can see the neighbor's 10 foot tall shed...

You can see how close we are here, neighbor's lanai is just 10 feet away on the other side of the fence...

Lastly, this picture shows how narrow the side "yard" (ha!) really is (5.5 feet)...
