Straw bales

By the definition they don't really count as containers since they are in direct contact w/ soil.

I've been reading about organics/synthetics here and am wondering if my organic ferts are going to get the job done in the bales, Al? JaG? I've got 6 toms in 6 bales. 9 toms in raised beds.

I found out that my bales are providing great aeration, but I was under watering. I rigged up a hose I freecycled to my second rain barrel and cut holes and provided wicks (something else I learned here!). I'll post a pic soon, It seemed the fake chamois I used, cut into 2'' strips about 12'' long didn't have much capillary action, so I tucked them into the straw bales about 3'' up. I'm hoping w/ a water source the toms and basil will put out deep enough roots to find it. Any one got ideas here? I'm wondering if I need to get a shamwow or something else and provide wider wicks?
