You have to get the roots of the invader out of the Zebrinus clump. If you cannot pull or tease them out, then you must dig out the clump and remove them that way. This should not effect Zebra's performance this season, especially if new growth has not yet emerged. If you do this, keep the plant watered (moist), treating it as though you have divided it. There is a more drastic measure: systemic herbicide, but ONLY if the Zebrinus is still dormant. I do not recommend it, but it can be done carefully by "painting" the blades of the invader with the herbicide.

If it is just the ends of the grass blades it may not be quite that dire. If the grasses have been 'brought on' in a greenhouse and are planted out in sun & cold/cool temps you may just have a case of leaf burn. My Miscanthus in the garden are barely starting to show their leaf shoots and certainly none of the leaves have started to unfurl. Like other greenhouse grown plants grasses should be slowly exposed to strong sunlight. AND .. it is quite common in 'our zone' to have Miscanthus come along a little quickly in an unseasonable warm period and then to have brown leaf ends from cold/frosty nights. I believe the brown foliage is more than likely a result of the whole planting experiance, the stress you put the plant through by moving it from its container to the ground. Most grasses (In your case Miscanthus sinensis "Zebrinus", or Zebra Grass) are quite hard to kill off ! They thrive, after becoming established, on neglect for the most part. I water mine only during drought conditions, and NEVER fertilize them. They will become floppy, more than upright. Since these are new plants, I would give them a good drink one a week or so if there's no rain, but relax, they will be fine. Remember the old adage, first year they sleep, second year they creep, third year they leap ! Next spring you should cut the foilage down to a small clump and it will grow back with little or no help. Yes, spring is best. But since you're in zone 7, and since you will not be dividing the plant, now will probably be okay. In NC, you will have more time than we up north for the plants to restablish themselves. Be sure to get as much of the roots as possible. Dig the new hole bigger than the root ball; fill in with friable soil (easier for the roots to grow in). Don't fertilize, and don't let the transplant dry out. Like Jake, I have moved grasses at whim throughout their growing seasons (with okay results), but have since disciplined myself to wait until Spring when I can divide as well.
