Very elementary container-planting question

I'm brand new to gardening (of any kind) and bought a decent-sized Japanese holly that I'd like to transfer into a container. What is the easiest way to get it out of its pretty densely packed, 12-inch nursery pot? Do I turn the pot on its side and somehow slide the holly out and, if so, what tools or objects do I use to do so? (I'm also doing this on a somewhat breezy roof deck and am trying not to make too much of a mess.) Thanks!
