Extending trellis for climbing roses

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for me to post this, but here goes: I put in three metal trellises last year along a fence and planted three roses. Now I realize that I need to have something in between the metal trellises for the roses to climb on. I would love to have some ideas how to provide this. I thought of finding or having someone build simple lattices to go between them, or perhaps, more simply, just attach some kind of fencing between the existing trellises, maybe to the wooden fence.

I am not real handy at building, etc., so need something simple.

I am going to attempt to attach a picture, but having never done it before, don't know how successful this will be.

Climbing roses can get quite large, and I think yours will outgrow those little trellises quickly. If you google images of climbing roses, you will see most of them supported by sturdy wooden or metal posts in a variety of designs.

I've seen roses grown on sturdy vertical posts with chains or very heavy rope suspended in swags between the posts, which might be a good solution for you. I couldn't find a picture of it.

You can make taller trellis supports out of long pieces of rebar from the building supply, bent into the shape you want. Check the rose forum for more suggestions.

Here's a simple narrow pergola, maybe a version of this would work for you?

Before you get into the details of what to do, I would take a step back and look at the LOCATION where you want this rose to grow: 1) What region of the US are you in? This will affect what you can grow - do you have freezing winters? Do you have hot humid summers? Do you have hot dry summers?, etc. etc. Each situation is OK, but different situations call for different kinds of roses, and you want to get one that will like what you have to offer. 2) How much sun will this rose get per day? Since you say this is a Northern exposure, this is very important. Look at the location, both at the bottom where you will be planting the rose, and higher up where the trellis will be. Look at it in various times of day. Folks on here can be much more helpful after we know the answer to these questions. Re metal trellis - not good, as in any sort of sun at all it would get too hot and burn the rose canes. Looking forward to hearing more about your project. The short answer to your general question is, yes, you can do this - it is not difficult. It is just important to choose a rose that will cooperate with you and where you are and where the garage is. Climbing Austin Roses and trellis

Lilyfinch, I already have a Spirit of Freedom that I got at the same time I got my Charles Rennie MacIntosh. I have already planted it at the end of my front porch. I'm trying to determine what to do with it once it reaches the porch railings. The railing is about 6 feet up. Ramblers are not only usually bigger, but tend to have very pliable, whip like canes that can be easily trained. Many ramblers however are once bloomers. There are some reblooming rambling roses out there tho. There are a many climbing roses that also grow very large and have nice flexible canes, but many can have stiff canes that tequire more work to train. It seems your pergola is a very nice size and you have space for a very large rose or multiple smaller climbers. I would like to add another one for you to consider. Mel‘s Heritage is a very very nice healthy repeat blooming rambler. If you google it and find old threads you can see Lisa’s Mel that is magnificent and Jeri also has a gorgeous one. I have multiple of this rose because it is extremely healthy and low maintenance. It also can be wrapped about anything (just like a rope) 11 feet tall In less than 3 years . It is a beautiful Austin and it gets pretty big.
