Dumb newby question about squash seeds

jayco

I cooked a Waltham butternut squash the day before yesterday and thought I'd save the seeds. Well, I put them in a bowl of water to wash off the orange guck and forgot about them. Today a bunch of them have sprouted. I took them out and dried them off. So, can I still save the unsprouted ones for planting? Can I use them this year? Or did I mess them up by soaking them? And do I need to do anything else to them besides drying them?

I do have a few more squashes left so I can try again if necessary. Thanks for your advice!
