Vegetable Gardening

What can I still plant in central NJ?

I know I probably missed the big planting season, but is there anything I can still plant?
At first I want to plant plants and trees that bear fruit, but I also want to to plant plants/trees that are colorful.

The house is about 20 miles from the shore.

For next year I want to plan out a detailed plan but for now I just want to get some plants in.

According to the government I'm in zone 7b. For now I would be more interested in plants that produce vegetables rather quicker. Long term I would like to plan something out.

The planting season has barely started in the Northeast. It is a good time for transplanting trees. Cool growing vegetables such as spinach, peas, lettuce and beets can be direct seeded now. Potatoes can be planted. Most other vegetables will have to wait at least another month.

You can plant bulbs any time before the soil freezes - now is ideal. And it is not necessary to fertilize bulbs at the time of planting. Bulbs, like seeds, are a fully contained organism with everything the plant needs to grow and flower already provided. All you need is decent, well draining soil in a sunny location. If you do fertilize now, be sure the fertilizer is well incorporated into the planting hole as new roots are especially vulnerable to damage, even from organic products. FWIW, Espoma products are not entirely organic - they are based on natural materials but most will contain inorganics as well, including ammonium sulphate, an inorganic salt.

I hate to be a bumper but...any news famartin? All of mine recovered completely; by late summer you have had no idea anything had happened to them. Am increasingly concerned about this winter as the "polar vortices" seem never to have retreated this year. OTOH, NOAA CPC is not calling for a colder than normal winter. So maybe there's a ray of hope. The northern tier of states getting snow covered so early does not bode well though...and apparently the Great Lakes never really warmed up to normal temp. levels this summer.

Cross County is a positively fabulous place for heirloom tomatoes (and peppers!) - my first few years, I would actually visit when they first opened up each April to the public - but as someone has mentioned above, they would sometime's already be sold out of certain varieties. These past few years, I place orders on-line in January, so I can be guaranteed that I'll get what I want. . .and with gas prices now, postage will be cheaper! Besides, the actual "farm" might be a disappointment to most: it consists of several "hoop houses", an office and a Port-a-Potty, all sitting in a pasture. . .their web-site, however, is dynamite. . . What can I still plant if I build in July?

I grew up in/around SF. Get a 5 gallon bucket, drill 4 holes on the bottom, put your summer tomatoes in there this year. You can toss out a few cuke vines, and some tomatoes, provided large transplants into the garden in July, but I'd prep for fall veggines instead. Do not pull them untill they stop fruiting completely, we'd get fruits in Oct some years. What you'll be looking at is starting a fall-crop of veggies for salads. Peas, carrots, spinach, basically your root & leaf veggies. Onions and garlic get off to a better start planted in fall too. If you want a strawberry patch, you'll wanna start in around Sept, so the roots can build up before it has summer heat. You'll be able to grow year-round, so figure out what you want to eat, and go from there.

Agreed-you aren't even past your last frost date.
Plant cool weather tolerant vege now, such as snow peas (will grow in containers as many as 1 seed per inch) or can be direct sewn into prepared soil.
Radishes-the small ones mature in 25 days.
Spinach, lettuces, etc put out starts now and pick outer leaves until it gets too hot.

In late may or June put in tomato and pepper starts-it probably is too late and not worth the effort to start from seeds yourself this year for those plants.
Squash White bush, yellow, zuchs, need warmer weather-direct sew them when you pull the snow peas and radishes.

What trees grow good in NJ?

That's a question for the Trees forum not the Vegetable Gardening forum.

What makes you think you have missed the planting season? Is your garden all ready for planting vegetables? If not then now is the time to get it ready but it is too early to plant much in the way of vegetables yet.
