Comments (2)OK, I took some pH readings today. I know the pH of my tap water is 6.5. The soil media of 2 boxes is sitting around 6.5-6.8, and the the other two boxes have a pH of 7 (a little high). Since no amendments (for micronutrients) have been introduced as of yet, I might go ahead and drain the water in the two boxes having a pH of 7 and refill with fresh water, and maybe some vinegar to bring the pH into the "sweet spot" range of 6.2 - 6.5. At the same time I'll be able to get a more precise measurement of the container's reservoir. I'd also like to start introducing the Foliage Pro for the necessary micros that are absent from the MG CRF I initially mixed in. By the way, the varieties of tomatoes I've planted (two per container) are Celebrity, and Rutgers. Comments (4)Hi Susan, I've been doing great. How 'bout you? I don't get on Garden Web like I used to, and I have missed all of you! We moved three years ago and I left behind all of my flowerbeds and gardens that I'd spent 20 years building up. The new place had no gardens, only the few I have put in since I moved here. I'm too old to build new beds like I did in my 20's and 30's. :) So no, can you believe I do not have a single banana plant (still have a few aroids, though)! Hard to believe, huh? I gave the bananas I had left to my daughter who is newly married, and I'm trying to turn her into a gardener too. She isn't totally sold but I can remember when I was her age, and my MIL forced plants that I didn't want onto me. I never dreamed what a monster she would create in me by forcing those cannas and a box of Breck's bulbs on me. :) I hope to do the same with my DD. I thought about going ahead and starting the Sungold seeds for our veggie garden, but I want to get them in early in Walls of Water. Last year we were late getting our tomatoes out and it got hot before they produced many, and we didn't get much of a crop. I may start a few of my heirloom tomato seeds and hope they'll get some size on them before mid April. Thanks for the idea. I love Winter Sowing and when I start them in my greenhouse in WS containters, they really get a jump start. Great to hear from you! Comments (5)thanks for your comments, they are all indeterminate. i have 5 different kinds; this one in particular is a 'mortgage lifter'. i read up on heirlooms, they all seem to be indeterminate and everything i read indicates that pinching the suckers is better for the fruit formation and results in better sized tomatoes. i went ahead and pulled them off, i don't want the plant getting out of hand and becoming unwieldy. i am sure i will have more and post a picture then. thanks again for your comments....See MoreTomato Plants In Stores South Of Me Now (Of Course I Did Buy Some!)
Comments (24)I hate it when life gets in the way of shopping. I try to have a well-balanced lifed during gardening season: spending half my time gardening and the other half shopping for the garden. Well, I'm just kidding about that, but Tim would say that we do seem to spend an inordinate amount of time at this time of the year looking for this or that, and he's probably right. I like having all the right supplies, tools, etc. on hand before the hot and heavy part of the garden season starts. I hate having to leave the garden to go buy something that I should have sitting in the potting shed....See Morebonechickchris
