Smart Pots vs Earthtainer: or hybrid of the two?

If I remember & understand correctly Smart Pots claims to fame are that their thick fabric like material is breathable and so it thoroughly aerates the pot 'soil' mix- it also directs the roots in a desirable way. If I understand correctly the Earthtainer also aerates the soil because air enters underneath the soil through the overfill holes and then up through the aeration bench holes- so the question remains: How does the Earthtainer fare in preventing the roots from wrapping around themselves of growing in an undesirable way?- Or is Smart Pots over hyping this problem to sell more product?
The other thing that occurred to me is what about a hybrid of the two based on the globalbuckets.org version of the Earthtainer (Same concept with two 5gal buckets, one stacked on the other)- the way it would work is you not only drill aeration holes on the bottom of the top bucket but you also drill holes on the side walls of the bucket then line the inside of the bucket with a Smart Pot- would this give you the best of both worlds? - I guess you would lost a little more water with the extra holes on the sides- but would you still have the ease of maintenance, eliminate over watering, give the roots an advantage with superior aeration- plus the roots growing in a more desirable way from the Smart Pot fabric. Then again what if you just used the Earthtainer bedliner material and zip tie or tape it to the sides of the bucket? Im a floor contractor/musician new to gardening so lots of questions

In terms of aeration a simple old pot with overhead watering will aerate the soil much, much better than either a smart pot or SWC.

I've tried several methods. I've built earthtainers, used 18 gallon totes and tried various flavors of grow bags. The grow bags were by far the worst. No matter what brand, they fall apart in about a year here in the Texas sun. Even with a well blended potting mix and mulch the bags dry out very quickly and deteriorate. They require frequent watering. I do like the earthtainers, as they have an 8 gallon reservoir. I've grown everything from vegetables to small dwarf fruit trees with great success. I do use an auto watering system to keep them full. This year I picked up some ideas from Larry Hall who has a youtube channel. I built several of the self watering rain gutters and purchased 50 of the walmart shopping bags and kiddie pools. I've already gotten my first round of tomatoes and cucumbers from this system and it's only early May. I have zucchini, corn and okra on the way The walmart bags perform the same function as the grow bags but only cost .50 each. They hold about 6.5 gallons of potting mix, have handles and seem to be more durable than the grow bags. You just need to keep about an inch of water in the kiddle pools and they wick up the water as needed. I know Larry has already gotten multiple seasons from his. The south Texas sun can be brutal so well see how well they hold up. But at a cost of .50 not a big deal to replace. .

I've got several Smart Pots as well as testing out a line of Fanntum Containers for my containerized fruit trees. I live in Central CA where the heat is crazy. However, only two of them have the gritty mix and I was betting I wouldn't make it through the summer in those. I suspect the gritty or 511 mix in a fabric container, in dry 100+ weather, will not work unless you are a watering maniac. I made it through last year in plastic containers with the gritty mix (added 20% more turface and reduced granite) but the hottest days did require container shading. Also the smallest containers, and one citrus tree where the roots were extensive and filled the container, required a cache pot or placing mulch around them. Those is my area scoff and say you *must* use peat or coir in every mix to survive the summer heat. Well I've certainly found that peat "bakes" (as does other media), when used in plastic containers in full sun. Just because a mix holds lots of water doesn't mean you can ignore root temps. There is not enough aeration in a heavy water-retentive soil in a plastic container for it to release the heat. A benefit of fabric containers is when you place them directly on the ground, the capillary wicking action of water in ground contact is supposed to help drainage even when you use poorly draining soil/media. In addition, supposedly the fabric containers "reduce soil temps" due to the aeration. So this year I'm testing with a typical peat-based soil, and an even heavier mix of cheap potting soil, in Smart pots and Fanntum containers on the ground to see how well they do. I'm hoping they'll require the same amount of watering as the gritty mix in plastic, yet be cooler. Don't know yet. I'm also testing blueberries in the plastic grow bags which are white on the outside and black inside. They are so cheap (like .75 ea for 10gal) and I want it to retain moisture and have cooler roots for the BB. BTW, so far I really like the Fanntum containers. Though they won't need "washing" like Smart pots, I do not know how well the "tarp like" material will last from UV damage. But the wire support around the fabric container is *very* helpful for larger sizes 10gal and up. I wish their 5gal sizes included wire supports, but they don't. It's not a retail type place, no online ordering, etc and they mostly cater to growers who purchase in bulk. But Alan Fanntum is sharp, flexible, and pleasurable to work with. He did the best he could to fit the containers in a small package to ship via UPS. You may pay as much for shipping as the containers themselves, but overall they were still much cheaper for me than Smart Pots. A 10gal container runs $4 whereas the smart pot was about $10 locally. Smart pots become economical if you brave the largest sizes, as they are only a few bucks more than the small/medium sizes.

One of the great things about fabric containers is that they act like small raised beds if you put them in contact with the soil and don't move them. The earth acts as a giant wick drawing excess moisture out of the pot. At the same time, it keeps the pot from drying out completely. For this reason, you can use a heavier soil mix in a fabric container in contact with the ground. I modify my 5-1-1 mix by replacing the perlite with DE (NAPA FloorDry) and replacing the peat with compost. I don't do that for my regular containers. I strongly recommend NOT moving these pots.

According to UC Master Gardeners and Sunset, you are very likely not late at all at planting tomatoes, depending on where you are in California. Here in Sacramento, I really like a planting-out date of somewhere around April 20. Nights are consistently over 50 after the beginning of May. You can certainly plant earlier, but I don't see the point (you run risks of unhealthy plants struggling with rain, cold nights, pests, etc.) I DO get beefsteaks ripening all the way through the summer, no problems. We certainly run into heat spells where there is blossom-drop, but they are interspersed with cooler periods and cool nights and it all evens out to great tomato production (even with heirlooms... honestly, you couldn't look at my garden in August and pick out which ones were heirlooms by fruit set alone. It just depends.) Just keep the plants healthy, growing, and pumping out new blossoms and plenty will form fruits. Here is a link that might be useful: My blog (gardening in N. California)

Wood fires, gas/propane burners, and electric (coil) burners ALL use energy sources to create HEAT at the cooktop/range surface, then transfer the energy in the form of heat to the pot or pan by CONDUCTION. To a minor extent, gas/propane burners and, to a greater extent, ribbon radiant burners, use energy sources to create HEAT at the cooktop/range surface, then transfer the energy in the form of heat to the pot or pan by RADIATION. The difference: hold your hand six or eight inches above an "on" electric (coil or radiant) burner; you will receive heat energy in the form of radiation, and it will be hot, but bearable in the short term. Put your hand (don't: imagine it, instead) onto the electric coil or the Ceran surface of a ribbon radiant burner, and your flesh would immediately be seared from the heat of conduction. Induction uses electricity to create a rapidly reversing magnetic field, not heat. When a pot or pan made of magnetic material is placed in that magnetic field, heat is created IN THE POT OR PAN by friction between molecules inside the material of the pot. The cooktop/range does not generate heat on its own, but some heat from the pot or pan gets transmitted FROM the pot or pan TO the Ceran cooktop by conduction, just as your wood table gets hot when you put a hot pot onto it. The term hybrid is sometimes applied to cooktops/ranges where some of the burners generate heat (ribbon radiant) and some of the burners are induction. We formerly had one of those. In practice, we never used the ribbon radiant burners except when the induction burners all were already occupied. Once one has used induction to cook, it is very, very rare that one voluntarily uses another method.

Thanks for the info gwrace!- I checked out some of Larry Hall's videos- I want to try the gutter method!!- if that works that would take the material cost way down, plus the kiddie pool looks interesting but dont think it would hold up to heavy wind since the cages arent really mounted to anything from what I see

Aeration depends more on the composition of your potting mix than on the composition of your container. SWPs require a different potting mix than fabric containers. In SWPs you need a mix that wicks moisture into the container, with a good portion of peat moss. I use 5-1-1 mix (with 70% bark) in Smart Pots, and there is little risk of over saturated soil because moisture is wicked out of the container. 5-1-1 doesn't wick well enough to work in SWPs.

The key feature of smart pots is that they air prune roots. The root tips reach the fabric and try to grow through instead of turning to the side and circling like they would in a hard container. When the root tips encounter air outside the container, they die and new branches form on the roots inside the container. I don't see how you could combine the two container types. The fabric in smart pots, unlike grow bags, is polypropylene. Mine have held up well for four years.

Ohiofem- I was thinking of lining the inside of the bucket with a smart pot- then drilling holes on the sidewalls of the bucket- perhaps I would have to drill a ton of holes to guarantee the roots would encounter outside oxygen and die like if there were no bucket outer shell. im guessing it would take more water- it the side holes increase evaporation- but a better root formation may be worth the added work. I like the sturdiness of an EarthTainer or Global Bucket- makes the cage sturdy when you mount it to the container properly
