Toni I only grow 1 kiwi for 'ornamental' purpose. Know that you need 1 male for 6-9 female plants to get the fruit. Apparently fruit nurseries/catalogs usually list suitable 'partner'. You can try to ID if yours is male or female by looking at the flowers-I never tried so far. Here is the sketch I had in my notes: (you can't distinguish male from female plants until they bloom. The male flowers have stamens, and the female ones have carpels.) It takes 3-5yrs. to get the fruit. Yours is mature, so I would probably try to buy another one & see if it works (after trying to determine sex of the existing plant). Just make sure you keep the sex/name of the new one, so if it doesn't work, you know to look for another male/female. Did you have flowers on yours yet? I grew mine from the cutting I got abt. 7yrs. ago, where it was also grown as ornamentsl only. They need pruning similar to grapes. BUT, I am not the expert, maybe there is more info here on GW. The fig is kept outdoors thru the summer, it's in the pot. My friends are Italian, they gave me the young offspring 2 yrs. ago. I had date palms sprouting in my compost heap couple of yrs. ago: after leaving pits in compost, I think they had just enough heat to survive the winter & to crack the seed shell. In spring there was about dozen palms all over the compost - I was amazed. I remember my mom trying to grow them from seed by cracking the shell with hammer, it worked for her couple of times. I don't have any animal babies, my daughter recently moved with her 2 dogs; kids always had dogs, cats and another pets around (incl. ferret & a corn snake), no birds so far. First was Doberman, lived 15 yrs; second was rescue Staffordshire Terrier lived for 16 yrs; now she has 2 that are 4...I think now I need little holiday. Rina

Are you sure the soil is moist? My potting mixture begins to dry out after the bag's been opened. As a consequence, I have to "work" the soil to get it to take the water. Else, water pours through the pot and yet it's still dry as a bone. Stick your finger in the soil and make sure it's not powdery. If it's dry, place your repotted plant in a larger container. Add water to that container and let the plant "soak" until the soil takes in the water.

Hi Mona, I also have T-5 lights that i use during the winter . The cutting that i am rooting right now are still in the greenhouse and i haven't moved them in two months. They are sitting on the heat mats and rec natural sunlight at this time. Hopefully by the time i bring them in, they will have rooted. But if they still need help, they will go inn the heated container w/ a few large rocks( I use ones about the sixe of my fist to keep the bottles from moving around) if i dont have enough to keep them secure. I like that they stay warm, reminds me of when i had a snake and i had to keep rocks in the aquarium to keep him warm with his light. (That didnt last long.. i had to feed him too.. My DH friends bought him a Bull Nose snake and i had to by the "pinkies to feed him" he only stayed in the house for 6 months, then DH found him a new home.. I dont mind Gerbils, Hampsters, Hermit crabs.. dogs..but i finally had it with the snake. Kim... if you need another alternate plan... heat mats with insulation and maybe a grow light that you could purchase at Lowes. They are about 10 dollars. I would keep them in a sunny window and keep the light on a timer. Hope that helps... I haven;t forgotten the DR seeds. They have stalled and i think they will be opening in the next few weeks. Hi Leslie! Yes I have rooted Vigna caracalla cuttings before. I make sure to have at least one internode below soil, use Rootone rooting hormone, and put in a clear bag to keep humidity up. Make sure soil is moist but not saturating wet. When it is rooted slowly acclimate the cutting to ambient air... by opening the bag for a short periods of time.
