SWC - can i use 3.25x3.25 pvc supports instead of 4' pipe?

I'm intrigued with the idea of making SWC out of the 18 gal totes. I purchased 3 of the totes with plans to do the single tote style using a portion of the lid for the soil support. We have a couple of used 3.25" x 3.25" (interior measurement) PVC posts from our fencing project. Any reason I shouldn't use these to support the soil base rather than the 4" round sewer pipe shown in most instructions? I was still planning to use a total of 5 with the center post being the one to hold the wicking potting mix & will drill holes appropriately.

Also could I do a 1 to 3 mixture of vermiculite to potting mix as I have vermiculite on hand - this rather than buying perlite?

Thank you for your thoughts.
