What type of edging to do?

We will need about 200' of edging. We got a quote of $5.5/linear ft for cement edging v.s $2.9/linear ft for poly edging (It said not the Home Depot kind, so I am hoping that it will stand the test of time and look a bit better???). What should we choose? We are not so concerned with permanent cement edging for now, but who knows, we might regret later, I mean, I just want feedback... Thanks.

I think your decision depends on a lot of factors that you haven't mentioned. If you decide to go with poly edging, the price you were quoted seems really high. I've used lots of it in my yard and if it's put in properly, I think it looks alright. Actually, if it's put in correctly you don't really see it. I've always used Black Diamond brand edging from a nursery rather than Home Depot stuff. I haven't put any in for a few years, but the last time I bought it, it cost $17 for 20 ft.

It's really easy to put in. I've included a link that shows how to properly install it, but in my opinion, it's missing a big hint. I always overlap it by about five inches at the seams. Do this by removing the top round part and the bottom "v" part of one piece, overlapping, and inserting a few screws to hold them together. This keeps the pieces from pulling apart and keeps grass from growing between.

Thanks for the advice. I do have a sprayer--just havn't thought of using it because of the chlorine/chloramines added to the pond by spraying the pond directly. I was wondering if anyone used some kind of jet along the edges. The bubble tube works it's just that when I run the Dolphin AV50 pump I get so much bubbles that the waterlily stems bend away from the air flow. It's also a noisy aeration pump. I'm going to look into getting a smaller one for next year if I can sell this one. Hard to do here in CD as not worth shipping back to anyone on the forum from the US as shipping costs are crazy. Another project for next year!

What type edging for a gravel/flagstone path?

If it's a flat surface and the ground can't slip away from under the slabs, they should hold, I would think, if you compact the dirt quite well. In your zone you probably don't have to do a crush base, could get away with just sand. We have a flagstone path like this, the stones aren't going anywhere.

Which ones? I have a whole tough tote full of half done waiting to be finished. One I struggled with for over 20 years and finally got determined to get it done, which took me a week. Then I grabbed two others and finished those in about two weeks. Remodeling and painting started, I just got through with that, so I hopefully will be back to sewing and cross stitch soon. Are you going to frame Tall Ships? If you frame, you do not have to worry about edges, just tape them or use fusable interfacing that you can trim off later when you frame it. It is always recommended to make the ground fabric larger than the actual finished size in case you do get some fraying and later clean finish the work.

I use a buried plastic edging and a line of bricks or patio block just inside the edging that the mower wheels can run on so we don't have to edge. While I love the look of the cut edging, DH mows the lawn and he vetoed it since he finds the mower wheels tend to drop down into the cut. If I filled it with mulch like mayflowers, my grass would be into the garden quite quickly, so it may depend on your soil and grass. Here is a new garden I was in the process of creating when I took the photo. You can see the edging and the patio block. By now (and by a few weeks after the photo was taken) the buried plastic edging is hidden by the grass and the patio block isn't particularly visible since plants tend to spill over onto it. I find that unless I am right next to the garden, the edging isn't visible; it usually takes a bit of searching for me to find a photo where the edging actually shows.

Is there a reason you have to have edging? It is not all that difficult to maintain planting beds separate and free of lawn encroachment by simply trenching or using a manual or power edging tool periodically. The look is much more natural (and I think classier) than using a pre-formed edging material of any type and concrete curbing is way too permanent - and obvious - for my tastes.

An alternative is to use brick or stone cobbles made for this purpose to supply a hard edge that can accept and support mower tires. But even these will require some periodic attention to keep the lawn from migrating bewteen the cracks.

We like the "park-like" clean look and we are not so good w/ regular maintenance so we hope the edging will help to achieve the look and slow down on the overgrown of grass/weeds. The edging is needed around the lawn, around the garden bed, separate the gravel area and the lawn in some area.

I am a bit concerned with the permanent concrete edging (though I don't mind the look, I would do stamp concrete), so I got the quote for poly edging and yes, it seems kinda high.

I'll check out the edging at the nursery to see if it is any better. Thanks.
