What do do about stagnant water along pond edges?

I am curious what other people do about the stagnant water along the pond edges--if they have it. In my pond the areas that are heavily planted with iris or grass like plants and hyacinth held back from going into the skimmer by water lily leaves seem to collect more algae and very little water movement. I did try a long bubble tube woven among the iris on the one edge of the pond but my current air pump is too powerful. I use a toilet brush to swirl out any collections of algae/debri that seems to get in there. Good hiding spots for baby fish. Anyone else notice this in their ponds and any solutions???
