sun gold and sweet million tomato feeding

I am growing these from seed and want to know at what point do I start to feed them and what kind of solution. I have never grown these before and would welcome any help on any feature of growing tomatoes. Also a good organic fertilizer. How much and how often to water. I have read some post here where people have said to starve them of water and force the roots to grow, I have never heard that before.

Well I hope I'm not too off topic as I have never grown either of those but them being tomatoes......

I don't use fertilizer for tomatoes I just add new compost to my soil each growing season and have lots of tomatoes.

So these are still young seedlings, correct? If so then minimal if any feeding is needed for seedlings. Some may use a very diluted (1/4-1/2 strength mix of your favorite liquid fertilizer once a week after the plants develop 2 sets of true leaves. You'll find this discussed in much more detail over on the Growing from Seed forum and on the Growing Tomatoes forum here. The specific variety you are growing makes no difference. All tomato plants are treated the same.

Once transplanted to the garden, that when actual feeding begins and at that time the choice of the 100's of products out there is yours to make.

As to how much and how often to water tomatoes? That all depends on your soil and how well it drains? In ground or in containers? Age of the plant? Has it set fruit or not yet? etc. etc. There is no specific formula or rule that applies to all situations or to all gardens or even to all seedlings when it comes to watering.

I have read some post here where people have said to starve them of water and force the roots to grow, I have never heard that before.

If that is what was actually said and meant then no and you won't hear that from anyone who knows anything about growing tomato seedlings. The point many of us often make is that you must avoid OVER-watering seedlings and that can destroy the roots and that they will tolerate UNDER-watering better than they will OVER-watering.

Okay - but here's my problem: I picked some this morning that were really orange and popped a few in my mouth - yes they were sweet and delicious - but... I have found that the ones I picked that still had a bit of green veining I put in a brown paper bag and that was weeks ago and still they have the green veins (although they are large) and are horrible tasting. As Trudi mentioned, they are bitter if there are greenish veins, but why aren't they turning orange in the bag? I've had 15 of them in the bag for over a month. For now, though, I am seeing plenty on the vine turning a great orange so I know now to wait until there is no green veins at all and they are very tasty when ripe. carrie

Yum, I'm with you... I only have room for 2 tomatoes in my new retirement garden. (I used to grow 24). I also agree with Carolyn... Taste them in your own garden to try them as I did using pots if necessary. I tried Sweet Million a couple of years ago and it was terrific, but it cracked!! Then last year I tried Nectar. It was even more delicious and no cracking. I planted it again this year but also taste tested it in a pot, along with 5 other cherry tomatoes grown in 1 gallon pots. Now before everyone jumps in to tell me these pots are too small, please note they are TASTING SAMPLERS, not intended to be full grown tomato plants. When I get a taste of the tomatoes to compare, I'll toss the tomato plants. Nectar had to be one of the plants grown in a 1 gallon pot so all tests would be equal. It had ripe fruit second behind Ample which was also very good, but not good enough to bump Nectar out of first place for taste. Still waiting for Sakura, Sunsugar, Sunpeach, and Sugary to ripen. Sugary has the most blossoms at this point... Absolutely loaded beyond belief!! This experiment has been totally perfect in every way for me. It allowed me to see which cherry tomato was the best for my garden and my tastebuds with my qualifications... Early. Sweet. Delicious. No cracking, lots of tomatoes. Nectar wins the test. If I run into a tomato I feel I can't live without, I buy a bigger pot and plant one. :) I encourage you to try it next year and enjoy the ride!! Rebecca

I like Sun Sugar better than Sungold. I've grown both, though not in the same year. Last year it was Sungold (which has outproduced every other cherry I've grown in the past couple years). The first ones of the season had an odd flavor, then in the middle of the season the flavor improved, but later on either I got tired of them or the flavor got odd again, so I started cooking with them instead of eating them in the garden. I don't think I'll grow it again -- too many other tomatoes to try! When I grew it 3 years ago, in a sunnier location, it produced even more and I think I liked it more. Two years ago I grew both Sun Sugar and Galinas, which had a similar taste that I never got tired of. If I were growing from seed, I'd choose Galinas because it produced more and is OP. But locally, I found only Sun Sugar transplants this year, so that's the one I'm growing again. I didn't grow Sun Sugar before that, but I did occasionally eat a few from a friend's plant.

How are the skins? I've always found that Sungolds, whether home grown or farmer's market bought, had relatively thick skins. I know it's gross, but when I eat them in bulk, more often than not, I keep a paper towel with me so that I can spit out the skins. I would have thought that drying them, while very tasty, would make already tough skin even tougher, but it'd be exciting to learn otherwise (though it probably won't do me much good this year, since that's the plant that the psyllids seem to be loving best :(). Have you tried using a micro-serrated steak knife to cut them in half? I've found that it's easier to use my steak knives for tomatoes, rather than even the sharpest Shun knife in the set.
