I have been a little carried away in planting a few invasives over the years. I need to get rid of a lot.

There are a few notorius spreaders here like the Reed grass and Yarrow but I have a few gems also like the Black Bamboo.

I don't have much room in my gardens for more Perenials this year but would love to make it worth your time if you have any tree or shrub seedlings. The late frost last year really hit me hard.

Hi Tom,

I would love to get one or more starts of the black bamboo. I know I have a lot of seedlings from my cornus Kousa chinensis and am always yanking out black walnut seedlings that the squirrels plant. I also have pecan trees here and may be able to spot some squirrel planted seedlings from those.

I'm in zone 6b (but it was undoubtedly colder more than 30 years ago when the pecans and walnuts were planted) so they are probably okay for your zone - the Kousa, you will have to check on.

I also might have styrax japonicus seedlings and I'll look around for other things.

Let me know if you're interested in any of these and I'll post again if I find more.

It helps if you draw the outline of the property on some graph or scratch paper first. Place the house and any permanent structures or major trees, etc. you intend to keep. This does not need to be to any scale. Then just go along and measure every surface of the house/structures, the length/width of the property and the distance from any major markers on the property (like the corners)to house and any other permanent elements to place them correctly properly on the property. Once all the measurements have been taken, you can transfer this information to a scale drawing. There are sometimes shortcuts available. Often plot or site plans are available from your local building authority or included with your closing documents. These can be a good starting point as they are not necessarily current documentation. Also sewer or septic maps of the property may be available. A long - 100' - tape masure is a big help, as is another set of hands. Or you can purchase inexpensive measuring wheels at home improvement stores like HD. Measuring is a detailed, time consuming process but rather essential for a successful design. Take the time to do it right.

No, bush and other determinate varieties do not need any pruning or thining of any kind. They produce fruit on those side shoots so removing them eliminates/reduces your fruit production. My own belief is that, within reason, yield depends more on square footage than numbers of plants. So each plant will bear fewer fruits and they'll likely be smaller, but the area will produce about the same quantity of fruit. I can't tell how many plants you have out there. There's a point where all the plants will be stunted if too crowded. If you're worried, best thing would be to cut some of the plants out at the stem. Don't pull them, if the roots are entangled, it'll hurt the plants you're keeping. And be advised that pumpkins take a LOT more room than melons. The vegetable forum, btw, has a lot more people who can chime in on this question.

Good idea to plan before you plant! I realize that you have some north/south sunlight issues, but those trees are going to shed a LOT of leaves all around your house, with the associated clean-up. It would be nice if you could place them where the leaves could drop to be self-mulching. The trees will only be producing a crop about once a year, if that, so they generally need less attention. Your more-attention crops would be better nearer the house, if you could work out the sunlight issues. Just keep in mind that when the annual crops are actually growing, the sun is more or less overhead, so don't worry too much about how low the sun is in winter, early spring and late fall. High-maintenance crops (and chickens, etc) get more attention if they're near the house. And then there's the winter issue of tromping out through snow, ice and mud every day or so. I'm not an expert on bees, but I really don't think they need their own yard -- that's probably wasting space that could be used better. Maybe putting them near the tree edges would be better? And I think you could scatter them around a bit, just tucking them in where they wouldn't form a barrier (as in a line). Do you really need so many standard-sized fruit trees? They take up a lot of room on a residential lot, and it appears they would block the solar access to your home and and some of the surrounding vegetation. There's no indication of how large your salad garden area is, but it looks like you're going to have to walk on some plants to harvest the others. Tempting, but not practical. Perhaps you could redesign it using keyhole walkways, thus having the most access with the most veggies? By the way, it's usually easier to read a map if the N is on the top side. ;-) Sue

The Black Bamboo is interesting. I think I paid $30 for one Rhizome three years ago. It is beginning to get aggressive but at $30 a Rhizome, I think IÂll have no problems keeping it in check. I have enough takers from Gardenweb that I wonÂt need to sell any this year.
They say that in the Southern zones it turns black after the first year. Up here more North it takes more like two-three years. I think I have five takers so far and the Black Bamboo is not as spread out as everything else so I am going to be limited to two Rhizomes per person.
I am surprised that I have had no takers on the ground cover Bamboo, its really pretty and a great ground cover at keeping weeds out.

I would love to have some of the yarrow. I have a couple of oak trees growing in my yard I can send. If you want wait for my Cherry trees to undergo the chilling process and then the germination process I'm going to put them through, I would be glad to send you a couple of those. I also have some canadian hemlock seeds planted. If they germinate, I would be happy to send you some of those. Just let me know if any of this sounds good to you.

Do you still have the black bamboo? I have a forsythia shrub called Goldilocks. It is an established shrub. I would be more than willing to trade it for some black bamboo. The Goldilocks is a smaller version. Let me know. Thanks
