Garage In Front of Home - Comment on this Picture
Comments (5)As a photography teacher, I can assure you that the photographer knew exactly what he was doing. First, he took it at a slightly "uphill" angle so that the buildings appear large and impressive, and the angle de-emphasizes the fact that the house entrance is kind of pushed towards the "L" where the two buildings meet. If this house were seen from the other side or from straight-on, it wouldn't look as impressive. Also, the graphic artist who placed it on the page carefully placed the spot where the house and the garage meet in the "gutter" -- that is, the spot where the two pages meet, and you lose a little bit of visual space -- so that you are mentally "forgiving" of that weak point in the plan. Finally, he allows the right-hand side of the roofline to run off the edge of the page, leaving you with the impression that the house goes on and on. It's a superb example of photography designed to show a house at its very best. As for re-creating this type of look, I definitely like the idea of an architectural element to tie the garage into the house -- and this house does it well in that the element is a "mini-version" of the front door's porch. I also agree that with this layout, a circular drive is a good choice -- but also an expensive choice because you're going to also need a straight-to-the-back-of-the-garage drive. Overall, I hate the pushed-forward garage concept. It does leave your guests wondering where to park and which door to use. In a layout like this, it crowds the front door and gives the front of the house an odd look -- unless you position yourself in just the right spot, which is what the photographer has done. Instead of choosing from one photograph, I suggest you drive around some neighborhoods and view some garages designed in this style. Look at them from all angles and decide whether this is what you want....See MoreSide entry garage
Comments (16)I think the dirt thing may be overblown but it depends on your tolerance. I just cleaned ours for the first time after 3 years installed. They are the 2 inch faux wood white type. I guess each situation is different but ours are high enough that only a 7 footer could see in and then he would have to be pretty close since the garage isn't lit up. He also has to get by the rose bushes and wouldn't that be suspicious looking. The blinds are left partly open depending on the season. Our neighborhood of 55 side entry garages has over 50 garages with blinds in the windows - there might be a few that don't but I haven't noticed any bare or window films....See MoreEnough room for side entry garage?
Comments (21)This is on a cul-de-sac? So people who approach your house will see the garage first, regardless of whether you go with a front or side loading garage. Based only on this information, I'd say flip the house. That'd allow people to see the house first ... and the garage would be seen last. As for the side entry, yes, it looks like you could force it to work, but forcing things is rarely the right choice. It only takes one time pulling into the garage a few degrees "off" -- only one time when the kids are distracting you -- only one time when you're tired -- only one time when the weather's nasty or visibility is bad -- only one time when the phone's ringing, or you absolutely have to get in to use the bathroom, or you're just not on top of your game -- only one time to dent your car and perhaps damage your garage. I wouldn't do it. Instead, I'd go with the front-loading garage (on the flipped house), which will be easier to live with. Buy really nice-looking doors. The price'll be offset by the shorter driveway....See MoreSide entry garage cost
Comments (10)Thank you all for your input! Ichabod Crane, the side entry is listed and pictured as an option, so it shouldn't affect the timeline, I wouldn't think? Live_wire_oak, your suggestion regarding the additional steel, framing labor, etc. could definitely be part of it. The lot size would remain the same, however. Mrspete, love your comment, this is exactly how I've felt throughout the pre-building planning process!...See Moresusieq07
