Yellow leaves on bottom of Pea plant

Hi Everyone,

First post for me after years of lurking. I've been growing peas in containers for 3 years now. I always seem to get yellow dry leaves at the bottom of the plant after a month or so. Just wondering if this is normal or a sign of some type of nutrient deficiency? I also have snow peas in the same soil, and they do not have the same problem and are much healthier. Thanks in advance for any advice.

What are you using for soil and how are you fertilizing - with what, what strength, how often?

Peas are also a cool weather crop & just don't do well at temperatures much higher than 70*.

Hi Al,
First let me say that I have learned many things from your posts over the years. If you ever set up your own gardening website, I would be your first subscriber among many, I'm sure.

Regarding the peas, I use last seasons potting soil that was used for tom's and peppers. I amend it with some balanced slow release organic fert. mix and dried cow manure pellets. The strange thing is that the snow peas in the same soil are doing great. Every year its the same: snow peas healthy, sugar snap yellow leaves at the bottom.

We did have a spell of 80+ weather a few weeks back but that would have affected the snow peas as well I think.

I'll run an experiment in the fall and use a new bag of soil for the peas and see if that makes a difference.

I agree. Plus the heat has probably gotten to them. It's late for first crop peas to still be growing.

Hi, I think you might have some leaf miners in those bottom pea leaves, but it doesn't look drastic. Leaf miners are tiny insects that get between the layers of the leaves and eat. They sometimes leave a pattern that curls around. The leaf will respond by turning yellow. But the rest of the plant looks fine. The mildews are usually pretty obvious with a white dusty looking substance on the leaves. Fertilizing container plants is not like plants in the ground. Containers are water much frequently than in the garden plants. What happens is that too frequent and too much watering will take away the nutrients, paticularly nitrogen. I would use liquid fertilizer, with less than one fifth recommended dosage every time. And would use a fertilizer with NO P, and very little K, but mostly nitrogen. Of course, your plants will tell you if they've too much or too little Nitrogen, by the intensity of green color. I Actually do this way, fertilizing some of my inground vegetables that have shallow roots. You may also try foliar feeding some epson salt and hydrogen per oxide by misting the leaves.

I'm starting to see something similar on one of my tomato plant. Part of the leaf is turning a light yellow with some small spots. But the whole plant looks unusual. the leaves are two shades of green which was worrisome. There are flowers starting to develop but I am worried.
