Bok Choy in Al's Mix

After doing a lot of reading on this forum and seeing what happens to commercial potting mix over time, I decided to give the 5:1:1 mix a try. I am in the San Francisco Bay Area. Locating the perlite and spaghnum peat moss were the easy part. I'm still not sure I've got the right product for the pine bark fines part of the recipe. I've chosen to experiment with redwood soil conditioner from OSH ($6/3 cu ft).

Minor detail on my part was that I had written down lime or gypsum on my shopping list. I bought the gypsum because I couldn't find the lime. This is the mix with the gypsum and here are some two week old baby bok choy seedlings in the mix.

I have since found the garden lime by Epsoma ($5-7/5lb bag) and made another container of mix. I'll plant some yu choy in that and see what the difference is. This is my first time container gardening and with these vegetables that I love to eat. We'll see what develops. Thanks for all the wonderful advice on this list.

Please do keep posting where you find supplies in this area.
