Hello all - just gazing at the seed packets and dreaming!

Have missed all my chums on the GW veggie forum, but it's time we start chatting again about all things vegetable garden. It is freezing cold with snow-cover here in zone 6b on the CT shoreline. I am snipping some lettuces here and there from a covered rack on the back porch, but all else is fairly solidly frozen or just minimally creeping by outside until it warms in several weeks. This is the hardest meanest piece of Winter right now, but I went out to the shed this afternoon and grabbed some starting trays with lids, got them washed up, and organized all my seeds as I am sure so many of you garden-heads have been doing. March 4 I will start my tomatoes - any earlier is just additional trouble for me to no good end. Between now and then I will start up kale, endive, rose orach, recao, collards, kohlrabi, cress, broccoli, many lettuces and mache, artichokes (new to me), bunching onions, a variety of herbs to live on windowsills until May, and of course the peas will get planted. Have to sneak out in a couple of days and put a cover over the pea bed to warm the soil so I can make the planting holes. In about 3 weeks it will be seedstarting insanity around here. More will get planted in April, of course, but some things demand that early start so that the seedling is big and hardy by last frost when it ventures outdoors to gain a new perspective. Hope you all have bought plenty of sterile mix and are having a good frolic with seed packs!

I'm on the coast 20 miles east of New Haven and I might wait even later to start tomatoes. Last year I started the end of Feb, first week in March and some were just a pain in the neck they got so big. Got them in the dirt May 14th.

Known anyplace close to buy Promix raisemybeds? Lots of places had it in May but last year I had to go to the Colchester Agway to find it in Feb.

Have started some seeds: Bhut Jolokia peppers. New Mexico State University said they can take up to two months to germinate (not, I think, with bottom heat, I'm reading people who got them up in 9 days).

Be nice if this summer is anywhere near as good as last, wouldn't it? Perfect for tomatoes. My first year growing in a major way (51 plants, 30 cultivars) and I was astounded at how well everything did. Sungolds over 14 feet tall.

Hi Raisemybeds! I share your enthusiasm about gardening and being ready to plant. I live in the deep south and have never seen any amounts of snow, but it still gets cold (38F last night). Recently, I built my wife 3 raised beds (4'x8'x12") and a couple of potato bins for myself. My wife went onto the Burpee website and got a little crazy ordering seed. Some she has already planted in one box, but waiting for warmer weather for the others.

I plan to plant a couple of varieties of sweet corn and some field corn, several varieties of cowpeas, butter beans, maybe a few melons. You know... I might just plant a few pumkins... a first for me. My 'stuff' will be planted in the field, of course.

Sincerely hope your endeavors pay off and we all get to reap what we sow.

do you have any real clue.. where you are going with this.. or are you just going to wing the whole thing.. lol ... there is a link at the hosta library main page.. bob did a big thing on seed growing.. you do NOT need a heat mat ... it sure helps up north here.. where my house goes down to 65 at night ... i am sure you know how to grow random seeds.. you spread them on the soil.. and when the soil get around 70.. things start growing.. if for 16 hours of a MI day.. the soil in the tray is 65 degrees.. then it will take longer to germinate.. that is all the heat mat is about ... is your house ever 65 in z9 all ?? .. i ran the heat mat at night.. when the heat kicked down ... regardless.. beer making/hydroponics stores sell a mat for germinating hops or barley ... i think.. 72 degree mat ... wafer thin.... you do NOT need to spend extra for one with a thermostat ... see link .. fitty bucks 6 oz solo.. use a razor to cut the bottom edge.. you will NEVER punch or drill into those cups..a i tried a million ways.. and simply destroyed a lot of cups.. lol .. didnt i tell you this?? pix of solo cups below ken the heat mat is actually below the bottom shelf .. pix are dated 1/25 .. and note the transplant size ... 4 leaf.. little finger sized ... i remember.. these size cups from the dentist office ... you will find them in the cup aisle at the store ... and on the 2nd pic.. Bon, : ) You are so sweet. I grow a gazillion different kinds of flowers every year, but the ones that grow every year are the ones that reseed and come back on their own. I do try to renew them with fresh seeds purchased every few years (like, for example, with new Laura Bush seeds from Wildseed Farms). I want flowers that will self-sow and perpetuate themselves fairly well over time because I don't want to start over from scratch every year. Many perennials can be iffy in clay. They'll thrive for a few years and then an extra hot, dry year (like 2011) will kill them, or an extra cool, extra wet year (like 2007) will get them. Those two extreme types of weather have done a good job on their own of weeding out perennials that cannot tolerate my clay in both extremes. So, when I find something that thrives in both types of extremes, I grow lots of it...hence, the huge poppy population for example. I am fairly picky about flowers----they have to be able to thrive in amended clay with little to no irrigation, no fertilizer beyond what compost and other organic soil amendments provide, only minimal deadheading (because I stay so busy harvesting and canning), no pampering of any kind.....and they need to stay disease-free. That means that I don't bother even planting anything reputed to be picky, persnickety or needing pampering. It also means the flowers I grow bring me much joy because they aren't stressing me out by being high-maintenance. And, yes, many of my favorites either are wildflowers or herbs, and they won't die and you can't kill them,making them perfect for a gardener who has lots of fruits, herbs and veggies and not all that much free time to devote to flowers. Having said all that, I'll give a variety of flower three years to prove its worth if I really want to grow it. If I cannot get it to succeed here with minimal care after three tries, I'm done with it and move on. If I cannot get it to grow at our place after 3 years of trying, I say "it won't grow here" and give up on that one. No one loves the wildflowers more than I do because they are so danged tough. A lot of flowering herbs are the same way---just tough, tough, tough beyond belief. I've been having fun planting flowers that need really well-draining soil in the back garden's sandy area the last couple of years because I cannot grow those in the front garden. However, anything I plant back there may (or may not) be eaten by voles in July and August when they exhaust their supply of whatever the heck they eat down in the woodland before they migrate upland to our garden plot. Wildflowers are kinda perfect for this area because I can watch our pastures and see if those wildflowers survive all summer. If they do, then the voles likely aren't eating them. I love agastache but haven't been able to grow it in the clay soil out front. Last year, Agastache "Blue Fortune" performed wonderfully in the soil out back and, as far as I know, the voles didn't eat the plants unless they have eaten the roots this winter. 'll see if the plants come back this year. If they do, I might plant some other agastache varieties back there. I am in love with all the plants at High Country Gardens but most of them need very well-drained soil that I don't have. So, if I can find something like agastache that the pine voles don't bother, I can order some of the different varieties from HCG and grow them back there, which would make me enormously happy. My daffodils down by the front driveway gate are about to bloom. I am so excited that something is about to bloom because so far the cool-season wildflowers have been really skimpy this year, and I think it is because of all the recent cold weather. The prettiest wildflowers on our property this year are the dandelions. People who love a perfect green carpet-like lawn don't like dandelions, but I love their cheerful yellow flowers, especially when they are the only thing blooming.

no, you dont often see them fresh, unless you happen to know someone who grows them. in stores you can find dried, dehydrated ones. they are a bit raisin like, and if you pop the seeds out of them you can start these. i havent tried this, but it should work out good, IMO. i have gotten some goji berry seeds in trades, many people keep them in the dried fruit to store them. best to get ones that arent imported, because food import laws require foods to be irradiated. but probably if your local health food/whole foods type markets have them they are in dried form, in with whereever dried fruits are....

I just planted my sugar snap peas yesterday. It was a nice 55 degrees when I started my yardwork but it dropped to 38 by the time I finished outdoors and I spent the rest of the evening trying to get my legs to warm up and limber up. I usually get my first cold crops in outside between Valentine's day and St. Patrick's Day. The warm weather crops wait until Mother's day to go in the ground; unless I'm feeling like a gambler and start a row of beans early.

I usually don't start any plants indoors because of my cats. However, this year my favorite store for bedding plants has gone out of business. I was VERY sad to see the local Feed and Seed close down. It irks me to pay $1.50 per plant at Lowes or Walmart when the Feed and Seed would sell 6 plants for $1.50 to $2.00 and they'd be better varieties. I may have to start some indoors and try to keep the cats away. Unfortunately, when I put the plants in the front room away from the cats, its also away from ME and I forget to water them!

If I'm not too stiff today I may get back out there and plant onion sets and lettuce!!

I am in aww of all of you! We are up here in the real cold of upstate NY (and no that doesn't mean just north of NYC - it means around Lake Champlain or forgotten NY unless your a ski person). Here we have lots of snow and ice around and if we are lucky we are suposed to see 40 degrees today which is very warm for Feb. We think that 38 is pretty nice daytime temp this time of year. LOL. Anyhow - my seeds are arriving and I am buying up seeds that finally are getting to our local stores for the gardens. But we wont be starting any seeds for a month or more. We cant plant outside until late May because of hard frost nights are still a problem until Memorial Weekend. I am more than ready for the ice and snow to go so I can play in my raspberry beds and work on clearing more sod around the garden to expand it this year. We purchaced a manual sod cutter last year and it works great to start up a new section or expand old sections and have most of the grass and roots removed before you start out. Hope all your gardens come along great. Hope for spring! It will be another few weeks before we see bare ground here to even try to putter but happy gardening!

I can relate to CT and upstate NY. I'm in the Detroit area, SE Michigan. We have about 6 inches on the ground. It's actually nice and sunny here today, going to 38-40. But, we are going to have 5-9 inches starting tomorrow night. Winter just hangs on and on. I'm hoping to start a few things in about a week or so under lights indoors -- peppers, artichokes, then tomatoes to follow a few weeks later.

I can usually get outside and start planting in my unheated greenhouse and cetain things in the garden, like favas, radishes, peas, by early to mid April. But, some years, we have blizzards as late as the end of April -- a couple of years ago, we had 14 inches of snow on April 25th.

Upstate NY... isn't that where Rachel Ray lives? My wife gave oldest daughter three of Rachel's cookbooks for Christmas.

It was up near 70 today and sunny, but a few months from now it will be in the 90's and WE will envy UPSTATE NY. I would really love to see that area as I have heard it is really beautiful.

I played on the tractor some today, but most places are just too wet to do much. We are planning on burning off some of the woods in a few days so just preparing for that.

Guess we all have "spring fever". I SURE DO!

yup I live actually in the area Rachel Ray hales from. She grew up in the Lake George/Lake Champlain area. About 45 minutes west of my home. Her mother actually visited my market stand last summer in Queensbury NY. It is very pretty here. But also very unpredictable weather because of all the mountains and lakes. A storm could bring a dusting to a foot depending on your exact location. We often get snow into late april so no outdoor planting goes on until at least May. And then you have to cover them or protect them sometimes. It has been known to super hard frost very late into May. So we are total weather channel or local weather news watchers. I hope to try to start some plants indoors in another month. I hate for them to get so big it is hard to care for them before it is safe to get them into the garden. Friends of mine started corn inside - not sure why because it is not one of those things you need to do - but they had 2 foot tall corn in early may and no way to transplant it. LOL. Oh well, I guess they learned the hard way.Anyhow, hope the snow holds off. Was nice here today about 37 and sunny. Felt like SPRING !!!!!!!! Oh my daffodills think it is - the ones against my house are peeking up out of the dirt. Could be a sign if the rest of the snow in the yard would go away !!!!!

Come on global warming! I wanna plant my seeds! I'm another upstate NYer and for those of you from NY, I'm in the Finger Lakes region. I've started a few plants indoors (probably way to early.) Some I started because of unreliable germination rates (somewhere between 9 days to 3 months) and some out of boredom. I have a big shoe box full of seeds. I pull it out about every other day just to look and daydream.

Today's high might hit 40 degrees F. WhooHoo! Later on in the week we're only suppose to have a high of 19 degrees F, very low for this time of year. So later on the week I will be in a very bad mood. I'm ready for spring.

I've done more than gaze at the seed packets. My seed box is full....yet I stopped by another nursery today. I was quite proud of my restraint. After an enjoyable 30 minutes of gazing, I left with only one pack of seeds. Still not sure where they will all get planted :)

I also have quite the seed box going. I bought about 60 dollars worth last week. My mom - my farm partner - bought another whole batch of wild flowers and such to plant for fresh cut flowers for our farmers market. She probably spent another $20. I was pretty good last weekend. I had 5 more packets of mixed wild flowers in my hand at walmart and I put them back because we already had all the ones my mom bought. But............give me time I will be back there this week and look at them again. LOL. I am already getting shipments from the seed co. that I ordered from back the beginning of the month - my seed box runith over! Some how that never stops us. Good thing I have 500 acres to try to figure out where I am going to put this stuff. My garden and fruit field was designated for 5-7 acres. Anyone got a big plow! I might need to till up another patch of land beyond the blueberry field.

I kinda feel out of place here as yall are all up north and I am in central Georgia, but at least we share a common interest. Thanks to you all.
Staying cold may not be all bad as our temperatures are up and down which confuses some plants. We have an apple tree and a pair tree in full bloom and tomorrow night it is supposed to hit the mid 20's. The highs have been around 70 lately and sunny so some things thinks ... awwww.. it's spring! NOT SO!
We live in a farming community (cotton, peanuts, corn, soybeans plus grain crops) and are big weather watchers as well.
Sherryls, 500 acres... WOW! With that much land I'm sure your hubby has some BIG plows. Speaking of plows... yesterday the folks across the road (dirt road) burned the remains of an old corn crib and he saw a piece of metal sticking up and managed to work it out of the ground. It turned out to be an old turning plow which was pulled by horse or mule. You would have thought he had found a treasure box... in a way, I guess he had.
Got to get out of here and replenish the wood box for the fireplace as tomorrow the high temp is suppose to be in the 40's and windy.

Shot, I have 500 acres but we are an old diary farm turning into a heifer farm/hay farm with my 5 plus acres of fruits and vegetables that my mom and I raise to market. We both being widows have to make ends meet so we have rented out the majority of our farm to my cousin who boarders us to raise his heifers and do the hay/corn for his animals since he does not have the acreage we do for his animals. And no I dont own a plow. I use a good manual sod cutter- lots of back breaking work. And a walk-behind rototiller. Though I am looking into a disc harrow to hook to my ATV for spring/fall work on the established garden beds. We do own a smaller tractor but where our garden areas are we cant get it into that space so I am thinking we are going to be doing more hard work to get the garden expanded for all those seeds I bought. I keep thinking of space that I can steal back from my cousin that he doesnt use to plant where the wild animals wont get all my crop.

Thank you for the informative message about your acreage. One of my fondest memories of childhood was visiting my aunt and uncle's dairy where for the first time in my life I got to drink ALL the milk that I wanted. To this day I still love milk and drink way too much of it. After I retired we started putting together a small herd and made it up to about 15 brood cows with a beautiful registered Black Angus bull when I was diagnosed with melanoma cancer. Anyway, we sold the cows as I lost interest until after I beat the cancer.
It is great that your mom is there with you. I lost my mom back in '79 who was also my best friend. Many times I wish she was here to share things with us now, but I feel sometimes that she is smiling down at me.
Sounds like you are a smart businesslady to rent out part of your acreage to your cousin, just too bad you can't get your tractor to your garden as it sure makes things easier - plus it's a lot of fun :)... in the spring... plowing corn about knee high... looking back and seeing it slightly blowing in the breeze...
One of my best friends owns about a 1000 acre farm, but rents more land for crops and hay for his cattle. In order for a farmer to survive these days they must have many acres as the profit margin is slim.
Went to town yesterday and bought a couple of pounds of Peaches & Cream sweet corn, couple of pounds of Silver Queen sweet corn and 5 pounds of Lady Cream peas. My wife has a long list of seed, but will wait and let her do hers as I don't want to hear "you bought too much of this and not enough of that". lol I have a 5 gallon bucket of white field corn that I shelled and saved from last year. It is so hard to hold off until the right time to plant as we usually get a late cold snap and don't want to jump the gun.

HOWDY! That is my southern for ya. LOL. Anyhow, living on a farm for most of my life you learn a thing or to about how to make it and you survive. You have to be smart and have a bit of faith that it is all going to work out. Soo.. planting is going to be a bit away for me now. We got almost a foot of snow yesterday. Today it was 20 degrees and sunny and tonight is suposted to be around -20. ICK ! And tomorrow night into Sat. they say another 3-6 inches of snow ! GRRRRR! Usually I enjoy winter and the down time and enjoy my winter sports. But this year I am not into it. I am ready for eary spring. NOT warm hot days or anything. Just when there isnt any snow so I can putter around and do some early season things and projects. I think the groundhog must have saw his shadow twice in NY!

Funny how us southerners never think about new englanders (all northeast is new england to us) farming. I also grew up on a farm - couldn't wait until I was grown to move to the big city - then spent many years trying to make enough money to move back to the farm. Alas..... here I am :)
My wife was born and raised in the city (Jacksonville, Florida), but she loves it here in the country.

Only got down to 32 last night and suppose to be up in the 70's by the weekend. Plan to burn off some woods over the weekend. Hope you have a nice one... Hey! speaking of sports... there is a NASCAR race Sunday :) - I'll be watching it.

Well, It was only 4-5 inches of snow and it was about 38 and sunny today so that dropped to about 2-3 inches of packed snow. SO not so bad but bad enough that our trip out to winter farmers market was interesting. And we didnt have the number of customers we would have had if there had not been snow. Still we did OK. We have lots of cookies left over so I guess my boyfriend will have lots of treats for his lunch box this week!

When I was a kid, truck farming was big. Farmers on weekends would load their truck with corn, watermelons, etc. and spend the weekend at the Farmers Market. Very fond memories of that.

Hi, New here. Gazeing at my seed packets as well. We've had really warm weather for the most part this so-called winter (today was in the 70s), so I went out today and expanded my already pretty big garden. It surprized the heck out of me how warm the soil already was (even down to about a foot). It would be just my luck that we'll get a late spring blizzard...

We also have had a fairly warm winter with some cold spells sprinkled in for seasoning. I am in the deep south (Georgia).
Last year we had a cold snap Easter weekend and I had corn, peas, and watermelons up. Didn't take too much of a hit, but a farmer friend of mine had to re-plant about 30 acres of corn. He says this year that he is going to hold off on his planting dates, but I know him... the weather will get right... the soil right... and he will start planting. Today is expected to be mid 70's here.
Knowing me, I will plant SOME corn soon, even if we do get a late freeze (which we also seem to do). Heck, I will just replant it...

And, of course, having posted that...It's snowing like mad here today! Picked up some sweet pepper seeds while I was out today.

Cant decide if I'm gonna start seeds today, or next weekend.

I'm going garden crazy.

The soil is still frozen solid outside and I am staring at it like I could heat it up with the force of my gaze.

It's not working though, so I started a couple of seeds inside. I have 4 basil seedlings now and swiss chard seed in the pot. I know it's too early but I couldn't help myself. Besides, these are both plants that can do well in pots in the winter.

If I don't get outside soon, I'm going to go insane.

Well,,,,,went shopping today near Albany,NY - hour and a half from home to a big discount store we usually visit 2 -3 times a year. Got lots more seeds!!!!! Some bulbs and wildflower seed. A couple of butterfly bushes we are going to have to nurse inside for another 3 months! I got a few more seed packets too. Radishes, tomato, pepper, and beets. All varieties I didnt already purchase. OI ! What to do when all there is is snow everywhere!!!! We also got some great deals on display baskets for our farmers market stand and some baking pans for our baked goods we sell. They always have the best prices. Makes it worth the trip every 3-4 months to get things we need. I did get to buy meself something after we almost got back home. Stopped at one of my favorite stores and got myself 2 nice shirts for less than $15 on clearance! I am so thrifty. LOL. My mom says it is my boyfriends' cheepness rubbing off. LOL.

Oh, yeah... I am SO bored with being stuck indoors when I know there's so much I need to do to prep for this year's garden. I've about worn out every catalog we've gotten. I've already diagrammed out what I want to plant where, now to just wait for Mother Nature to cooperate!

We are getting a sting of winter mix storms this week. We are in the middle of one and expect another on fri-sat. So maybe it will down some of the snow. But then yet with temps good for a winter mix it only takes that degree or two to hammer you with another dump of snow!We also have our annual St.Patricks day winter storm that usually dumps about a foot to look forward to. I just hope the weekend storm doesnt hurt our winter farmers market. It is hard to know how much to bake if your not sure how big of a crowd is going to brave the weather to come to visit. Last week was our first week we had a storm that affected us. But people still came out. Not our usual crowd but still a decent enough amount of people. And since we are the ones with the goodies and the reasonable prices all the vendors visit us too for their afternoon snack. Winter,Winter go away and come back next christmas !

So, I did start my tomato and pepper seeds last Sunday. How ironic that the first to poke their heads up...Early Girls.

My soil is warm enough, gonna get some peas in the ground this weekend.

I have the same weather as Sherryls. We're under a winter storm warning until tomorrow morning. So, I did start some tomatoes, peppers & eggplants to take my mind off of it. I have kohlrabi, broccoli and asparagus peas to go. I might start some flowers tomorrow.

Well so far the storms have been mostly rain and this afternoon (SAT) we get about a 1/2 inch of sleet and then back to rain. Maybe we wont get alot of snow if the temp stays up enough. I am just getting to see my younger blueberry plants and if the weather stays nice this week like it is suposed to might beable to get outside to do a little bit. All will tell by morning. I think I am going to start some seeds soon. I know I should wait another few weeks. Maybe I will give it another 2 weeks and call it close enough to April. We have a few bulbs already sprouting that we bought sitting in the house. They need to be potted I think. At least until I can get them outside. My agenda is set to finish spring cleaning this week and early next week at both houses so I am ready to work outside and spring clean the berry field and garden ASAP. When the weather finally decides it is spring I will be ready to rumble.

I started everything around March 1 last year and by planting out time it was way too time consuming to look after everything. I'm sowing fewer and later this year. Probably also influenced by the weather Â there's still a foot of snow and ice on the ground, pouring today, it will be May I guess before the soil warms and dries. I should set to spring cleaning like Sherryl so at least I'm ready when the warm weather comes!

I built two potatoe bins (mentioned in another post) and in one of them the potatoes are already coming up. It is suppose to get down to around 28 tonight, so I took the cover off the bbq grill and covered up the bin... I figured the grill wouldn't miss it for one night. No other freezes in sight after tonight.

Spent a large part of the morning aerating the backyard (boring), then did some more cleaning and prepping on the garden. Also, set up a new starting room in the basement.

Well the storm took down some of the snow with rain/sleet/freezing rain. We have a bit of ice around the driveway now and I have to fix a tent building because the 50 mile per hour winds did a bit of damage. I will fix that today and throw some salt/sand down to deice us a bit. We still have about 6 inches + snow on the lawn/field. It is suposed to be good weather all week. Around 40ish in days and mostly sunny. Of course we still get cold at night (single digets to teens). However, they are predicting a storm next Fri into Sat.(ie: the St. Patricks Day storm I mentioned a few messages back.)But, it is a week away so maybe things will moderate and it will go off the coast and not dump on me again ! lol.

I started my peppers and brassicas not quite 2 weeks ago. Started tomatoes yesterday. Peppers look good so far.

Here's my pepper seedlings. Yolo Wonder is slow to germinate. Jupiter is also a bit slow. Everything else was up in about 7 days.

Here's my Brassica's, also nearly 100% germination within a week, along with some Stevia seedlings. This is my first year stating from seed, as well as my first year winter sowing. Maybe went a bit overboard this year......

Well I got myself in trouble again! I went to Walmart and bought another 8 or so packets of seeds. Varieties of things I didnt already have in my stock pile for spring. I think I am going to need another acre cleared for my garden to get all of this stuff in! Still got snow but it seems to be melting and the birds are chirpping like crazy. So spring has to be comming!

Hello all - just gazing at the seed packets and dreaming!
