Broccolini Happy Rich forming heads early?

Hi all,

I have never had much success with broccoli or broccolini... so I honestly have no reference point of what a broccoli plant is supposed to do. Help, please.

I planted some broccolini starts a few weeks ago. Since then we've had both extremes of weather typical of the Bay Area... a few frosty cold nights, then a few warm 65 degree sunny days, then more 40 degree days, then 65 degree days.

The main stems on these plants are still just about a pencil thick and the plants themselves are only 1' tall at the most. They each only have a couple of big leaves.

Almost all of them have started to form tiny little clusters in the center of the leaves that look like the beginnings of the edible head.

This seems a little early to me.

Or, have I finally gotten broccoli growing down right? Is this what a broccolini is supposed to do?

(FWIW, the variety is Happy Rich, which is more of a sprouting repeat cutting broccoli.)

Thanks!
