Plants grow fast, veggies grow slow

I've been living in Southern California for a few years now, and for that whole time have been experiencing something odd. Any vegetables I grow take off and grow vigorously, until they start to produce veggies. Then, instead of continuing at their good pace and providing lots of food, they just sort of stop. An example is pole beans... I've always known them to be a high producer. In the SF Bay area where I'm from I'll be eating them every night and still giving them away to friends. But here, the plants will be tall and healthy, and as soon as the little flowers start to come the growth slows to a crawl and I am able to have beans for dinner maybe once a month.

Anyone else experience this kind of thing? What can I do about it?
