Painting/Sealing Terra Cotta

Hello out there in GradenWeb land.

I have the astounding luck of living near a terra cotta pot factory, which happens to have weekly seconds sales. Meaning that I have a great supply of cheap BIG, but unglazed, pots. I love the look and the price and the weight is not a big deal, however, it gets awefully hot around here in the summer and I worry about the evaporation from the clay. I have a drip irrigation system on a timer, but I am wondering if any of you have had success painting or sealing pots.

Using what sort of paint/sealant?

Would it even help?

Am I better off just watering more?

Part of me thinks the evaporation would help keep the roots cool, but there seems to be such a preference for glazed or plastic pots that I feel a little guilty subjecting my plants to the tortures of terra cotta.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Amber
