making changes to terra cotta pots
Comments (2)I would imagine a stain could color it darker if that is what you wanted. As far as aging, I don't know of any trick to speed it up, but there are a couple things you can try to see if you like the result. The first thing is the whole milk or yougurt coating and then leave them sit to see if they will grow moss. Dunno how reliable this would work in full sun though. The other thing is that terracotta tends to stain over time becuse it is porous. Salts from fertilizers, mineral deposits from hard water eventually end up working through to the exterior and gives an aged look. Possibly you might exploit this by filling the empty pot with hard water and possibly even add some fertilizer (synthetic) to hasten this process. These are just ideas, I haven't tried any of them....See MoreWhat to do with cracked terra cotta pots?
Comments (10)I repair my cracked Terra cotta pots! And I love the repaired look. I saw this on a tv show a few years ago. I use some electrical wire, peal off the plastic coating, so I have just the copper wire. Then use a masonary drill bit, drill a hole on each side of the crack. Thread the wire through the holes, and twist it on the inside. If I remember right, they called these "staples" Sometimes it take more than one staple to fix the crack. I also will put a coat of construction adhesive on the inside of the crack. If is is an actual break, where a piece has come off, I use the adhesive to glue it back in place. Then put the staples in. The pots have this old aged repaired look, that I think is really kewl! HTH Jenny P...See MoreDo any of you paint/decorate your terra cotta pots?
Comments (6)I've done both painting and decoupage on clay pots, havn't done any for awhile though. The ones outside lasted a couple years with the decoupage,as i had put several layers of decoupage medium on them.I still have a few in the house that i use on special occassions like xmas, and patriotic holidays. Those i don't plant in,just set a pot inside of them, and they still look like the day i did them which is over 10 years ago.I remember the time frame as i was still working then and i did them for a store display where i worked.I retired from there in 1999,so that's more like 15 years + - Kathi kathi...See MoreI have a mildew crisis on indoor terra cotta pots!
Comments (7)mpersall, Just wanted to let you know you are not the only one with this problem. I moved out here to OR from WI and am having the same problem with my terra cotta pots. It is definitely not salt buildup. It looks like the mold that sometimes grows on the surface of the potting soil. I wonder if since clay pots are porous the mold spores that sometimes form this white mold leeches through the clay pots every time the plant is watered and grows on the damp outer surface of the pot. The good news is that it hasnÂt spread to anything else and my plants as well as their roots are mold free and very healthy. If you really want to stop the mold from growing a sulfur based fungicide will kill mold but it can take several applications and the pots become so coated in the stuff they look really awful. (Believe me I tried this on some of the pots and ended up having to repot the plants it looked so bad.) I decide that if the mold problem gets worse I will use a very watered down bleach solution on the outside of the pots and see what happens. Sarah...See Morearbo_retum
