Reemay v. Agribon 15

i'm protecting against insects, not frost. Does anyone have any experience with Agribon 15? Reportedly doesn't build heat inside, can anyone verify that?

i see Johnny's carries it but in much larger quantities than i need-2000 feet! i'll have to figure that part out. Other weights are available in sizes more suited to the home gardener so the 15 weight must not be a widely popular product.

Reemay is available locally although only in 5' widths. i think i recall reading here that Reemay is thicker and coarser than Agribon. Is that right? Are there other differences?

i have used tulle which works OK but width is only about 4' which is a little short.

I use the AG-30 in the 83" x 100' which protects with 6F frost protection and allows 70% light transmission. I like the weigh and longevity. Air and water easily pass so there is not a lot of internal heat.

The AG-19 offers 4F frost protection and allows 85% light transmission.

I use the hoops so wanted the better wear. I tried reemay and found it does not stand up to wear or UV. The AG-30 width of 83" suits my wide beds, especially for my brassicas.

I've used the AG-15 for seed saving purposes(for peppers) and to keep out insect pests (on squash & cukes). It's heat buildup is slight, but it does trap humidity, which is a problem for some crops. For the most part, I'm pretty happy with it.

However, Mauirose, I know from another thread that wind is a real problem for you. The AG-15 is durable enough for occasional wind, but chances are you might have some tearing under your conditions. I get very little tearing when floated over plants at ground level, but thunderstorms can rip the covers on my pepper cages.

What crops are you planning to cover? It might be that shade cloth could overcome the heat buildup.

I will take a shot at helping, but I will say I am not sure what your climate is exactly like so I will use temperature references. First off, spinach does like organic matter and Nitrogen. I am not sure what polluted fertilizer is, but if that is like compost it was probably a good thing to add. I add composted manure a week or so before planting then again in Spring I topdress with it. Spinach prefers temperatures between 5 ~ 25C. Once you start having weather above 25C ( 78 F ) consistantly it tends to look 'tired'. A few warm days followed by more cool weather, especially cool nights, will revive it. Spinach takes quite a while to germinate, and, is inconsistant, especially if the seed is not fresh. Plan on 10 ~ 30 days for some of the seed to finally sprout. They should remain moist this whole time. Once it is up it is very tough though and with a bit of covering ( 3 ~ 4" of leaf mulch is what I use ) it can survive overwinter as a small seedling and begin growing again in spring. I plant SPRING spinach in October. It sprouts in November, then when the ground freezes I mulch with the leaves. I cover the leaves with chicken wire so they do not blow away. Our winters last from late November/early December through about mid March. This whole time they are covered. Our low temps get down to ( -18 ~ -23C / 0 ~ -10F ), when the temps in spring get up around 10C ( 50F ), usually mid March, I remove the chickenwire and leaves. We usually have damp rain/snow mix type weather for March and April with temps from 0 ~ 20C and the spinach loves it. I have several hoops up now in the garden. On Cape Cod you may want to put your hoops closer together to strengthen the structure against the two big dumps of snow and the wind from the Nor'easter that comes thru in late Nov. Because you will soon learn you can grow cool seasons all winter there. Second, your issue will also be heat on sunny days in spring. You will want to have someone around to vent. Next, look at the product called Wall O' Water (WOW). They are standard out here in the Intermountain West. They allow me to set out my toms and eggplant 4 weeks before last frost. Then, you will need two thicknesses of row cover, a very light weight for near last frost, and a heavier (~1.5 oz.) for the cold snap you will get several weeks away from last frost (esp this year). I have two sets of hoops up now with cabbage, spinach, lettuce and arugula underneath, with two layers of 4 mil and two layers of 1.5 oz fabric and still going even after one low of 14Ã¯Â¿Â½F so far ( in a raised bed using water to retain heat ). We have tremendous sun here so very easy to gather heat. Your plastic should not be the painter's tarp from the local BigBox as that will shred. You may want to look at Territorial's Tufflite IV if you get your seed from them, otherwise cheaper elsewhere. I don't use black plastic (no ideological reason) but instead I use a film from Johnny's Seed that warms the soil ~8-10Ã¯Â¿Â½F after just a few days. Put it down 4-5 days prior to planting out. HTH. Chris, Look at some of Elliot Coleman's books on all season gardening. He uses unheated greenhouses in Maine. If you put a layer of reemay over the flats inside the GH, you can greatly increase the protection. I use something called Agri-Bon 19 that's rated to 28 degrees (got it from Johnny's). I don't have real greenhouse, just one of those 4 shelf things with a vinyl cover, and used the reemay in there with geraniums and other tender plants and it protected them at freezing - your lettuce and cole crops are much hardier.

Jay, I always worry about that kind of weather-induced bolting and some years it is inevitable because onions are biennials. I am particularly worried about it this year, just because we've had such abnormally cool weather much of this winter. For anyone reading this who is new or fairly new to growing onions, the key is that onions which are less than the diameter of a No. 2 pencil (approx. 1/4") generally will not bolt even if exposed to temperatures below 45 degrees Fahrenheit for a prolonged period of time. Once the onions have reached 1/4" in diameter, prolonged or repeated exposure to temps below 45 degrees push them into dormancy, and they 'think' that dormancy signals the end of their first year of growing. Then, when they warm up and start growing again, it is the second year and they do what biennials do in their second year.....they send up a flower stalk to set seed. I don't know any way to prevent that sort of bolting because it is a natural process. The best chance of preventing it likely would be to grow them under a low tunnel and hope the low tunnel keeps them warm enough during cold spells that they aren't pushed into dormancy. It might work even better with a frost blanket added inside the low tunnel Eliot Coleman-style during colder spells. I guess you could keep the low tunnel warmer by painting milk jugs or 2-liter or 3-liter bottles black, filling them with water and using them as solar collectors. With low tunnels, I'd be worried about excess humidity on sunny humid days though. (sigh) Jeff, I think we only have two kinds of growing seasons here....those that are too wet and those that are too dry. I am not sure which is worse. As much as I hate drought, I almost think I'd rather have drought than a rainy year. At least in a rainy year, you can irrigate, at least for as long as you can afford the water bill and as long as you are not under mandatory water rationing. In a wet, year, though, we can't vacuum up the excess moisture out of the ground. I've had the idea in my head for months that this would be "the year of the bean" because my beans didn't produce well last year, and of course, it is always the year of the tomato at our house. Thanks organicdan, durability is important so i think i will skip the reemay.

Zeedman you are right about the wind. It's another reason i want to try a smaller piece first to see how it works out. The tulle has held up OK so far but it offers very little wind resistance and it is in a more sheltered spot than the main garden. i am hoping to clip the Agribon to the hoops as i have done with the tulle. Shade cloth or even mosquito netting might be another option.

Seems obvious but i had not considered that humidity might be higher under cover. Thanks for mentioning that.

Crops to be grown under cover might include greens, brassicas and zucchini (Cavili is working out pretty well). i'd like to include peppers but i think they are too big. (Wait-i just noticed that you said pepper cages??) And if anyone knows of a parthenocarpic pumpkin or winter squash please let me know!

I just bought agribon 15 from Johnny's in a 50' length (10' wide) for $19.95 plus shipping. They also have agribon 19 and 30, but since I'm only interested in it as a summer insect barrier, I want to get the greatest light transmission possible and that is the agribon 15.
