I am on the same mission for a Hass "substitute" for Florida. My research has already ruled out ALL Hass and similar varities as being a futile exercise according to the input from the experts. The trees will grow, but there are fruit problems I haven't tasted one yet, but Oro Negro may be the best option for Hass lovers living in Florida. Oro Negro may have some yield and early drop production issues that might effect its commercial importance from what I have read. Too soon to say, but two Hawaiian varieties Nishikawa and Yamagata may have some promise and are starting to be sold at some Florida nurseries. Both are excellent tasting varieties (in Hawaii), but little info on how they will do in Florida.

If you are close to southern California you should try the OC CRFG scion exchange in January. There were over 60 varieties available this year.

I have grown avo trees for 40 years....mostly via drip systems. My recommendations: For very small/young trees the drippers are fine. It is important to target in the small rootzone. After trees are in the ground for a year or two....go to the micro sprinklers that M is talking about. They cover a larger area...and this reduces the number needed. Young trees need more frequent watering than mature trees. However, do know that avocados love water. Standing water/flooded ground is not good....and leads to root rot. Giving timetables for water is impossible because of the many variables. Mulching areas around trees is very helpful. Hope this helps...
