root pruning of large junipers--help please

A while back I asked questions about the proper soil for repotting my large juniper spiral topiaries. They are about 7 feet tall.

At the risk of re-opening the soil discussion (I've got that part all figured out now. Thanks, Al), I need to know how to root prune and how much to cut back.

I haven't actually pulled them out of their old plastic pots yet, but I'm assuming they are very rootbound and dry (I sort-of "inherited" them from a friend moving into a tiny high-rise condo).

I have searched the discusssions of repotting, and have found some advice for root pruning of deciduous potted trees. I just can't seem to locate any specific advice of how to treat the roots of large conifers. How severely should I trim back--what is safe for junipers? I want to reinvigorate them, but don't want to risk overdoing it.

Thanks in advance for all help.
