Due to cost of postage, I only do trades of 5 or more DIFFERENT plants. I have most common perennials. I have very limited space left so small starts of 1 or 2 divisions is fine. I also have very limited sun area so need mostly shade plants. I reserve my sun area for Lilies & fruit.

I have grown a great many Penstemon species but this is the only one which has lasted. I have had this one for about 17 years. It divides well also. Hardy to zone 3 I believe. Originated from Lake Tahoe.

Hi! Jean, I am trying to get some information on Persicaria Virginia. I think Virginia is the one that is varigated and the leaves look lacy like and are white and green. I did not see your post as I have not been reading them lately because we have been too busy. Looking over your list I have all the plants that you listed. I have started to collect some Tiarellas, Heucherellas now. I do collect Heuchera but the winter here in Michigan are rather hard on them. They seem to heave over the winter. Do you have any, and if you do, do you have trouble with that? Would you be so kind and tell me what your Persicaria is like. Thanks. Betty

I received 'Rosea' at a plant swap & it's currently in bloom. Not as full as the Great Plant Picks below, but has clumped up since it's humble beginnings as a stem with roots in early April. It's suppose to be well-behaved not aggressive or weedy like some of the other mountain fleece. A lot of my plants flop because of too much shade from the surrounding forest trees, but this one hasn't. By the way Great Plant Picks is a great resource even for you in eastern WA. All plants should: Be hardy in USDA zones 7 and 8 (0ÃÂ° to 10ÃÂ°F/-18ÃÂ° to -12ÃÂ°C) Be long lived Be vigorous and easy to grow by a gardener of average means and experience. Plants requiring specialist knowledge should not be considered Be reasonably disease and pest resistant Have long season of interest and preferably multiple seasons of interest Be available from at least two retail plant sources in Canada and the U.S. Be adaptable to a variety of soil and fertility conditions Not require excessive moisture (with the exception of aquatic plants) Not be invasive or overly vigorous in colonizing the garden or larger environment Perennials should not require staking, continuous deadheading, or frequent division. Trees and shrubs should require little pruning and nominal training to achieve their best form (excluding plants used for hedges). Bulbs should persist in the garden, without being lifted, for at least three years. Variegated plants should be stable and not revert. Hummm....good to know that 'Painter's Palette' can be a bit of a spreader. I got one last year, but it hasn't done much, probably because I keep moving it around (ya' think??! Lol). Your 'Pink Elephant' is really nice rouge21- very nice light shade of pink. I also have P. 'Red Dragon', P. affinis 'Himalayan Boder Jewel', and just recently got a lovely P. amplexicaulis 'Blackfield' at a local plant sale in late August. It is still blooming away too!! They also had 'Golden Arrow' at the sale, but I didn't get it because it looked mostly green leafed and not much gold to it. After seeing another GWebbers plant I am kicking myself for not snatching one up!!! The foliage seems to get much brighter in more sun (guessing they were kept in shade at the sale). Another one I want to learn more about and maybe get is Persicaria 'Silver Dragon'. Some sites (DG for one) shows a VERY silvery leaf on it, while others show a plant more like 'Red Dragon' with a hint of silver markings. Anyone have that one? It took FIVE YEARS for me to see a bloom on that 'HB Jewel! Not sure what the problem was, I didn't move it and it was planted in a nice situation. Anyway, the flowers are wonderful. They are a light pink but are also attractive when they fade, to a reddish brown color. I didn't cut back the spent flowers and it started blooming again this fall! -lacyveil, that Crimson Beauty is gorgeous! I might have a large space opening up next year for such a big beauty. Would you say it is a fast spreader? Hard to keep in control? Reseed any? CMK

Hi, I have one in my garden, two actually, I bought one last year and its return was fairly ambiguous and so I bought another and planted it near the existing (somewhat) one. Last year it looked great, it got quite large and produced a lot of flowers, neither is doing well this year. They may need more heat than this summer could provide ( I sure do ) and so I am not sure of what advice I would give other than to give it a shot, it's only a 10 buck gamble, but maybe try it in the spring rather than this fall so it can have a good go of it before winter. By the way, I believe the zone is borderline 4 and closer to 5. Mine is in full sun, good soil and gets regular water without fail. Another persicaria that is more hardy here is persicaria polymorpha, it is zone 3, it gets white fleecy type flowers, nice deep green foliage and it can get quite large, there are some really nice ones growning in the Clemens Gardens in St. Cloud.
