HAVE: shade plants tiarella (foam flower),persicaria (la

I have the following shade plants to trade, tiarella (foam flower), persicaria (lance corporal), celandine poppy, miniature ladies mantle (has a white edge along the outside of the leaf) and pulmonaria.

I would love to trade for low growing sun plants like hens and chicks, low growing sedum, stone crop, alpine, rock garden plants or hardy prickly pear cactus.

I also would trade for epimedium, unusual ginger, or helleborus (lenten rose).

I would love to trade for some of all the things you listed. I have hens and chicks(no name), sedum acre and blue spruce (lots) another sedum (don't remember name right now!) and also a couple of hellebores orientalis.
PLMK if interested, but would also like to wait at least a week or so as we are having a major heat problem right now and suppose to hopefully cool off soon! Thanks, Melinda

My nursery specializes in shade plants, & there are lots of great shady characters not mentioned yet! Carex siderosticha 'Variegata' or even better... 'Silver Streams' Carex morrowi 'Ice Dance' I prefer Clematis virginiana over C. paniculata mainly because it's native. They can both be aggressive and self seed into natural areas... at least C. virginiana belongs in the US. :) Geranium macrorrhizum 'Variegatum' Geranium phaeum 'Margaret Wilson' Pretty much any hellebore ('Golden Lotus' has been amazing, 'Onyx Odyssey' has pooped out) Kirengeshoma palmata has been a great grower for me and is huge. 4'x4' every year. Lamium orvala 'Silva' not your typical groundcover lamium... this one is upright and has big flowers. Leucosceptrum in general. They need a better common name than Japanese Mountain Mint, because mint is a dirty word that scares people. These are well behaved clumpers. Salvia koyamae a big 2-3' tall and wide yellow flowered salvia for shade. Not a super flower show, but great plant. Sanguinaria canadensis - bloodroot. A great native that has short lasting flowers and awesome foliage. I WISH there were a variegated version. Solidago flexicaulis 'Variegata' A goldenrod for shade. This one has foliage splashed with gold. Not aggressive, but give it some space... 4' wide. Pretty much any Tiarella, Heuchera, or xHeucherella. Especially the creepy kinds. Uvularia grandiflora like solomon's seal but finer textured with peundulus yellow flowers from the tips. That's not to mention all the great woodies like Jap maples, Hydrangea, Lonicera, Tsuga, Taxus, Eleuthrococcus, etc etc etc! Oh dear - reading the posts upthread, it would appear that these plants are less resilient than expected. Mine are just going into their 4th year in a VERY challenging situation, competing with established poplar roots, along with a trove of thuggish woodlanders such as red campion, stachys (various), lamiums (various), violets and cleavers... the latter having reached epic proportions after interfering with the weedy hierarchies. But that is a long and often lamentable tale of learning (more or less) as you go. Anyway, after yanking skeins of goosegrass (galium aparine), my NOID tiarellas appear to be going from strength to strength. The entire process - gardening in only the loosest of definitions, is often opaque and mysterious with many dashed hopes and one or two successes (such as the re-appearing martagons, 6 years after my sketchy sowing) I am more than familiar with dwindling or even completely vanishing plants - I must have released hundreds of them into the wild, never to be seen again, so I I not disheartened enough to risk my pink umbellifers (which have been a frustrating and exasperating trial of patience and stubborness).

I'm a different zone than you are, but I have a lot of shade too. Some plants I have in shade are: hydrangea azalea dwarf azalea astilbe columbine hellebore pulmonaria hakone grass (nice bright color!) bleeding hearts monkshood foxglove lily of the valley tiarella heuchera viburnum hostas, hostas, hostas, lol! (lots of beauties out there!) solomon's seal geraniums plumbago ferns sweet woodruff ajuga Some of the above are in beds that do get some morning sun. Do you get any sun at all? And can you plant spring bulbs that can bloom before the oak trees leaf out? Shade gardens can be incredibly lush and beautiful, places of peace that refresh. Okay, I know, corny, lol, but I do believe that. You just have to learn what can grow in the shade, accept that these will grow while sun-lovers just won't, and learn to appreciate the beauty of those plants. :) Dee P.S. Terra Nova Nurseries(wholesale) list 19 different varieties of Tiarella's. You can get some idea of the available flowers and leaf size/patterns from their website. Many of these are stocked by local and online nurseries. There are also other varieties available. The Tiarella cordifolia, var. collina(Syn: T. wherryi) is a clumper, T.c., var. cordifolia(Syn: T. macrophylla) is a spreader. They both require shade/part shade in a moisture retentive soil. Your mini ladies mantle sounds like the one I've been looking for. Is it Alchemilla alpina?
If so, I have a number of different low growing sedums. I can send you a list of them if you'd like. Just let me know.

Hi! Jean,
I am trying to get some information on Persicaria Virginia. I think Virginia is the one that is varigated and the leaves look lacy like and are white and green.
I did not see your post as I have not been reading them lately because we have been too busy.
Looking over your list I have all the plants that you listed. I have started to collect some Tiarellas, Heucherellas now. I do collect Heuchera but the winter here in Michigan are rather hard on them. They seem to heave over the winter. Do you have any, and if you do, do you have trouble with that?
Would you be so kind and tell me what your Persicaria is like. Thanks. Betty

I do have a number of heucheras and I have had very good luck with them...I am near Albany NY....zone 4/5.

About my Persicaria....I have 2 right now Lance corporal & Painter's Palette. I have had red dragon but it does not like to overwinter. I have gotten these plants from The Variegated Foliage Nursery in CT.

The lance corporal is more bright green with the chevron across each leaf......PP Persicaria virginiana is much more yellow.
