I am guessing you are refering to Sequoiadendron giganteum. As far as american chestnuts, you are going to have a hard time finding any that are not part of research or a special program, in which case they are protected from sales or distribution. Some people are selling seeds which claim to have a chance of being resistant though success is very unlikely. If you really are absolutely dedicated to propogating these trees, you should become an american chesnut cooperators' foundation member. You will need to fill out a contract and request seed for fall 2009. The only reputably resistant tree I know of for horticultural use is on the white house lawn. These are no wollemi pines. Hey, you never know. There are reportedly blight resistant producing American Chestnuts here and there.

There are some supposedly located in Portville, NY (about an hour and a half from Buffalo) at Pfeiffer Nature Preserve. There have been some reported blight resistant Am. Chestnuts in parts of Tennessee. Like I said, you never know.

Obviously, I would be interested in some of the seedlings beneath mature American Chestnuts. And not from parks or preserves, but from the property of private owners only.

Where in the southern tier are you? I am in Binghamton. I started a program to propogate trees from seed for public planting a few years back. We have just become a cooperator and are supposed to be getting ten seeds this spring to keep a record of. There are persistant chestnut trees on our campus that are near 100 years old, but are definitely not resistant as they remain in a constant state of death and suckering. In time it would be nice to graft resistant stock onto these ghosts. There are quite a few similar trees in the hudson valley and other parts of the state. Let me know if you find a source for cuttings. How are your sequoias doing by the way? I have one that is now passing through its fifth winter from seed and have recently begun rooting cuttings.

Sorry it took me awhile to get back to you.

I live in Hinsdale near Rt. 16. (10 minutes from Olean) You probably know where that is-just hop on the I86.

If I learn of any Am. Chestnut cuttings, I'll try and get my hands on some and get some to you. I went looking for the supposed mature American Chestnuts at Pfeiffer Nature Preserve last fall, but to no avail. I'll keep looking into it.

I've been experimenting with my sequoias, but overall they're doing very well, thanks for asking.

I started by planting four of them up on the hill in the forest in part-shade. They didn't like that very much! They put on good first year growth, but are now stunted and not doing well at all.

I planted two nice size sequoia's in a lower area in full-sun and they're doing very well! One is three years old and the other four. The full-sun has really made the difference. One had almost total brown-out after it's first winter and looked dead, to be honest. But it came back and actually put on a good amount of growth this past summer.

I thought is was near impossible to propagate sequoia's from cuttings-how are you doing it?! I'd really like to try it.

There are quite a few Am. Chestnuts in the area. 6 or 7 right on my road on a slope facing north. They're your typical blight-infected chestnuts; saplings growing for old root systems. I took some of the leaves to press, etc.
