Tips for growing figs or dwarf apple in pot?

Hi all,

I've asked questions about trees for my yard before on other GW forums, but it seems like I'm getting the most enjoyment using my concrete patio right now (it's right off my kitchen, too), so I want to continue decorating it with pots.

I'd like to try an edible tree in a pot (to add to the 6 new citrus I've planted.)

Anyone have success growing dwarf figs, or a dwarf apple (or pear) in a pot?

I've asked at my local nursery... (and yes I KNOW that nursery folks everywhere can often be wrong)... but I got an emphatic "no" from the tree guy there. He said that they won't produce fruit in a pot.

Then again, I've seen photos of people's potted fruit. And 3 of the books I have about growing food in pots all say it CAN be done.

So I'm wondering what are the tricks?

How often do you need to root prune those babies?

How big a pot is best for something like that? Do you start small (as you would a citrus) and work your way up?
