Trees for Louisiana, any advice on what to plant and where?

Basically we want to plant a row of trees along the driveway (both sides of the drive), small flowering trees around the house, and replacement trees (for the current white oaks and hickory).

The trees need to be low maintenance and either large when planted or fast growing. No pines. IÂve included a link to photos of the property below.

The budget is extremely limited, and IÂve looked at the local forestry office and ArborDay.org. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

IÂm planting this for my mother. Unfortunately most of the trees she likes are slow growing and I can only find a foot or two tall with our budget. For example, a row of live oaks along the drive. While I can plant those, I would like to plant some other trees that she can enjoy now (or very soon :) She also loves maples and flowering trees (dogwoods, crapes, redbuds, magnolias, grancy beard...). She does not want to block her views.

The driveway is 336 feet long, on one side has power lines and the other side has a line underground. The "blank" east side of the house is where the septic tank is. The house site is a square of 208 feet on each side.

By replacement trees, the white oaks are getting older and we were told they may not live too much longer. We are not removing any trees. The replacement trees would be planted nearby the white oaks.

Kerria japonica, Euonymus americanus, Leycesteria formosa are shrubs with green bark. I also wonder about Dicentra spectabilis 'Alba', which flowers in spring. Is the flower formation similar to your plant? http://awaytogarden.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/white-dicentra.jpg Was this plant evergreen through winter, or did it die to the ground in winter ? I think that any flowering pear in the area the OP lives in has the potential to become invasive, if the flowering pears aren't already invasive there. While it is west of the Appalachians, it is the same general climate as the areas of the SE where the flowering pears have become so invasive. I think almost any other tree - well, not any of the other invasives like mimosa or ailanthus - would be a better choice. If the general flowering habit of the pears is what is wanted, there are a few crab-apples that are similar in shape - selecting carefully can give fruit as well as flowers. A flowering plum, cherry or peach might be good also. Serviceberry might work (spring flowers and summer fruit), as might a dogwood (Kousa will give fruits also). Another choice might be smoke tree - one of the Cotinus cultivars - new ones have varying leaf colors. And I do like redbuds - there are cultivars for flower color as well as 'Forest Pansy' for purple leaves. A maple will usually give good fall color, and there are any number of good, tough, small ones, in addition to the 2 already mentioned. Hop hornbeam might work, as might blue beech (Carpinus caroliniana) although it is slow growing, so maybe not....

I have to tell you my house doesn't look like that anymore. That picture and the ones with it are from before I bought the house. It's very different now. Even the front has changed very much. The saw isn't mine either, Linda, it's the previous owners. If you want to see what my sunroom looks like you have to go to the main page and then to album 8. The front yard is totally changed, every tree out there is gone, along with the juniper under the big window. All the new trees are in and I'm watering them, raking up little tree branches from the old pear tree so I can mow. I didn't realize the whole yard has been covered in them all winter. Oh, and the backyard is different too, the weeping cherry is about five times bigger and there's no longer a pool and deck. There was another Bradford pear out there behind the outbuilding that broke in another ice storm right after I moved in. I'm also going to have to take out the big redbud, half of it is laying in the yard right now, it's even blooming. ) :

Remove the old, blemished leaves as they become breeding grounds for mold/mildew and other germs. The one leaf is yellowing so it is past its prime. The other two are blemished from some kind of pathogens/injury and will only get worse (and weigh on your nerves too as they get worse). Sometimes it is hard to remove leaves due to the old myths that the plant needs them to photosynthesize which is true but the plant should have enough reserves in its roots and stems to regenerate new leaves. I often remove every damaged leaf off some plants (outdoor plants and houseplants). New leaves often appear within a couple of weeks. Sometimes I have to cut the entire plant down due to death in the stems for whatever reason and the plant will often send up new shoots from its roots.

What leads you to believe that the white oaks may not live much longer? In my neck of the woods, their life span is hundreds of years unless they are damaged in some way by man or nature (hurricanes).

You have probably already tried the La.forestry dept,I know they offer bareroot saplings which would be too small for what you want but they might have a source for larger ones that would be available to land owners at a reduced price. As far as Im concerned the best bet for prettiness the quickest would be the crapes....also remember that dogwoods do not like full sun.They are an understory tree that would need protection from the hot afternoon sun of La. You can purchase native hardwoods which are going to give you the quickest results, as far as growth is concerned ,in nurseries from 1gallon to 25 gallon containers .Ive seen 1 gallon trees that are 4 or 5 ft tall so keep shopping,they are out there.Look for a nurserymans association website(I think one is Central Louisiana Nurserymans )they list nurserys that I know would probably be able to help.
