Does anyone else find this a pain in the but?

Do I hate not knowing where to empty all the soil in my last years containers to make way for this years new annuals.

I have about 15 big pots that still have dead plants and soil in them, and now I have to find a place to empty them heavy things..

I don't have a huge yard, and ALL the yard is well manicured and mulched with plants on every corner..No where to dump the old stuff nor the desire to lift them to do so..lol

Amen, brother Mike! I have 2 not so inconspicuous piles of old potting mix under 2 bushes on the edge of my property. =) I think i'm actually going to use one for a pumpkin patch this year though.

Actually, what really irritates me is when people have a subject line of "A Kitchen Question" or "Help", because, this is a kitchen forum, obviously it's a kitchen question, and if you're asking a question, obviously you want help!! Similarly, I regularly check craigslist "Free" items, and I am equally annoyed when the subject line is "Free". DUH! A general request to the world: Have subject lines that give readers some idea of the content inside! Otherwise I won't bother opening "A Kitchen Question", unless I'm really, really, really bored. @msrose,Yes, I got the spray, it is a lightweight spray and it doesn't feel oily and not at all once it is dry. It's not thick like some of the sprays are. So far I'm in awe of it but this is the second day and so far so good! I have tried so many others that like you were saying, they are oily and I would have to rub and rub to get it to do anything and then it was streaky, or else it looked good but then would dry streaked. I hope it will work well for you too. I am sure you can find it in the store for less. I got it on Amazon and by the time I paid for shipping it was $10.95 or somewhere in that neighborhood for the smaller can but I knew I would never remember to get it when I was out and about so I just paid it "this time"... a2gemini, I gave up on training DH. I think he must have been a rebellious teenager, there is some hangover from that going on, lol. Anyone else get painful skin splits on fingers?

normally no...but this week has been a killer...my lips are chapped and hurting...and my thumbs both have splits...I usually lather on Lanolin grease I got thru Amazon and sleep in gloves...that clears it up in a couple of days...Hubby ordered four huge bottles of Amlactin for Christmas...he uses it and we sent a bottle to his Mother and gave the other ones to the kids...it doesn't work for me...I got a bottle subscribed a few years ago and hubster ended up using it...Now that its on Amazon he loves it! There is a lanolin grease called Lansinoh you can find at some drugstores and also back in the baby department at Walmart...its sold for nursing mothers...lather some of that on your hands and sleep in gloves...you'll be amazed at the results! I think every one of our bodies are different and you just have to keep searching till you find what works for you!!

When I lived on flat ground I paid to have soil trucked in to make planting berms. A multi-level garden is just more interesting. Al

If you have any grass, it will make a really good top dressing for the lawn. Or mulch for the landscape beds.

Great ideas everyone!

But these containers have spent soil.

Basically, the roots to every plant in every container completely filled them, so there is no soil left in them. Just a big dead mass of dead roots with the stumps of the dead plants sticking out.lol

If I was to pull the stump, the whole pot would lift up, but these things are so darn heavy, especially when wet!

I think I am going to stick with small annuals this year like impatients and coleus, this way I can just pull them out and still have half full containers with soil by the end of a growing season..

I think I will just shovel the dead material out this time around, and the huge root balls, and dump them in a dumpster or the woods at my work..This time I have learned from my poor choice of plants and will stick with the smaller ones..

If you compost, add them to the mix.

Yea, that's the ideal solution...chop it up & put into compost! =) That's what I should have done...lol.

I looked at my dirt pile this morning with thoughts of a Pumpkin patch. Maybe The Great Pumpkin will visit it! ;-)
