Speaking generically, you can grow any veggie in a container heirloom, OP, hybrid, etc.

Root crops are going to need a deep container to get much yield. A 6" deep container isn't going to be a good choice for a carrot variety that grows 10" for example.

Other than that the sky is the limit.

There are many veggie in container growers here and I would dare to say someone here has grown darn near every type of veggie there is in a container at some point.

I've grown broc toms cukes onions peas beans squash kale collards green onions chives peppers all types lettuce cabbage chard a few tings out of a salad greens mix pack that I'm not even sure what it was but was good and I have a garden the soil there is a work in progress so I always save one of each thing that i put in the garden to put in a container they come in faster most of the time so get an early one i've never had a prob growing in five gallon buckets other than the kale and collards that have been with me all winter are trying to escape out the bottom and have rooted in to the ground below so i can't move the bucket anymore

I'm growing everything in containers this yr. I have heirloom seeds. Scarlet Nantes & Tendersweet carrots. I'm also growing black beauty eggplants, straight eight cukes & German giant Radish. Oh and Lisbon White bunching onion. So far so good but too early to tell how big my harvest is. I'll just be glad if I can get enough to save good heirloom seeds for next yr! Pretty much anything can be grown in a container.

Make the container big enough, provide appropriate water and soil. Then you just have to deal with the same things regular gardeners have to: temperature, spacing, and sunlight.

If you are on a budget, try 5 gallon buckets ($3-5 at stores, messy but free from some cafeterias/bakeries) 20 gallon plastic totes, or 55 gallon plastic trash cans.

What I've done is to take 5 gallon buckets, and saw them off about halfway down. the bottom half gets used for shallow root-ted crops (which for me includes radishes) and then the top half is used to extend the height of a 5 gallon bucket to maybe 7 gallons (tomatoes)

To some degree, you can grow plants that are normally larger inside of smaller containers if you water them more often, trim them if they go a little big. I wouldn't recommend making tomato bonsai though.

There is a book called "The Bountiful Container" written by McGee and Stuckey that has lots of information about container gardening.
