The last location the deer kept nibbling them so I can't fault the location. They now are directly in front of Gloire de Dijon (climbing on the low fence) in a very sunny location. Do yours crumple in the afternoon sun? Interesting your experience with Old Port one of the posters (hopefully they will post again) raved about it. That is why I love this forum! In regards to Cottage Rose. Cottage Rose has been very healthy and disease resistant (although very thorny). It is the only pink I have left in the back. I am removing it because I am not partial to pink and my house has been color coated (a different color). I also planted it many years ago (one of my first Austin's). I purchased it pre-Clair Martins book (before we knew what monsters some of them could become). I think it would be lovely in a larger area!

There is a shrubby form but most seen here are the typical one that grows into a large broad tree. 6' x 10' would be the kind of shape and size many ceanothus have. Otherwise a drift of several of something less broad-growing could be used instead. Other possibilities include choisya, cistus, escallonia and Viburnum tinus.

A little tough for me to follow Jeff Whyte's thoughts but there's a reason here why I rarely use the term "architect" and instead use "person of talent". I've said here before I know architects personally (yes, the ones with all the education, credentials and 15 letters after their names), I wouldn't trust to design a house for my dog. We're no different than any other profession, there are great architects out there as well as poor ones, education not withstanding. And back before I semi retired and had my big firm of 16 people including 6 architects, we had a guy who started out as the office boy when he was in high school and then went full time after graduation. Very creative guy with just a lot of raw design talent. By 25 he was one of our two lead designers. We always encouraged him to go to school but no interest. He's a "person of talent". And as far as formal education vs. experience, like we encouraged the person above to get some formal design education because it is of significant value, at the same time there's nothing like experience. I think a colleague of mine, Bob Borson in Dallas summed it up well.... "Architecture is not a trade, it's a craft, and to get any good at it you're going to have to get it wrong for a while". Euphorbia tirucalli "sticks on fire" will go with your aloe plants. Caution: sap is a severe skin irritant, wear gloves and long sleeves, handle with care. This variety should max out (slowly) to around 6 ft. Although they are most often planted in full sun, you should get enough ambient light to maintain the fiery orange colors. Edit: The green form is used in Tanzania by the Maasai as hedge material to keep out lions from cattle -- don't accidentally get this form! It gets huge.
