foundation plantings for front entry

I have a spot next to the front door. It is 18" x 4'10", very skinny, I know. The site faces east, so it gets early to mid morning sun, do to an eave. We also have deer issues.

I have been considering an evergreen shrub such as Boxwood 'Green Mountain'. For the last three years I had shade perennials planted there, but as you can guess it only looked good 3-4 months. Our house is a split-level, built in the early 60's. We are installing a small brick patio adjacent to the skinny spot. There are lots of rhodies and azaleas in front of the windows. Money and experience are also considerations, since I am somewhat limited in both areas.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have.
