That close to the house, anything you plant won't be getting rainfall. See how the ground is dry right now in the picture. Sure, you can water it. But not much will get tall enough to fill that bare space and stay narrow enough. Plus you've got nearly five feet of run to fill so you're going to need variety to avoid the soldier look.

I'd do a bit of a mix. A couple of taller, narrow selections (Buxus 'Graham Blandy', Ilex crenata 'Sky Pencil' or Euonymus 'Green Spire') would add some height, and are both shade and drought tolerant. Fill in with something lower - sweet box or Sarcococca humilis is a great choice. A low evergreen, slowly spreading groundcover that offers intensely fragrant tiny white flowers in winter and thrives in dry shade (an eastern or northern exposure). An excellent and very welcoming plant to have by a front door. Add seasonal color splashes with pansies or impatiens.

Remember drought tolerant doesn't mean no water, specially right after planting :-) These are plants that once established are able to survive with minimal rainfall.

Thanks for the advise. I am leaning toward the Buxus 'Graham Blandy', simply because the deer have eaten our Euonymus down to the ground. I'm curious though, how would I plant them? I agree with gingerblue, that I don't want the lone soldier look. Yet, when I draw out 2 Graham's and 3 Sarcococca's it doesn't look right.

4'10" isn't a great deal of space. I'd opt for one Buxus that would be centered approximately between the windows and to hide the downspout. You may want more than just 3 of the sarcococcas - they spread pretty slowly. Cluster them closest to the front door and offset them with something like an evergreen fern (sword fern is very drought tolerant) to the far side of the boxwood. This will provide a different texture and an intermediate height and prevent the planting from being too soldierly or symmetrical. Fill holes in front with the seasonal color.

DIL has a similar spot at her house and she had luck with Star Jasimine on a trellis that we attached to the house. You may have already tried it, but she's found it deer resistant.

Thanks for the tips. I loved the link for the Star Jasmine. I previously had a Star Jasmine in that spot and it doesn't look anything like the one you posted. We are putting the patio in this weekend and then I will plant next week. I also like the idea of the hiding the down spout. If only I could grow a Jasmine like the one in the link. Any ideas for companion plants to the Jasmine?

Why are you limited to 5' wide? Is the patio going in at the 4' 10" mark, doubling as a path to the driveway off to the right? Could you curve it out, or offset it, away from the house?

Actually, I am no longer limited to 5' wide. After reading all of the responses I've decided to extend the space to include the back of the patio. So it will now be super long and skinny (18" x 13'). I like all of the suggestions so far, I'm just still at odds on how to plant them.
