Hippeastrum species for other species

HI all,

I just got in some various Hippeastrum from my friend in India and what he would like me to do is try and trade a few extras for other species. I do have a couple of hybrids that I can trade, but am only interested in species in return. I have the following for trade:

H. equestre

H. roseum

H. vittatum

H. pailio

H. 'Mrs. Garfield' (a wonderful rare hybrid from the late 1800s

Hippeastrekelia 'Durga Pradhan': The first hybrid between a Hippeastrum and Spekelia.

I would also love a Sprekelia howardii, but I am guessing no one has this as I got no response to my post about it.

I have many species that I am currently growing from seed and I have sent these seed to India as well so that hopefully these can be propagated and become more widely available in the U.S.

If anyone has any species that are different from those above and different from the ones I am growing from seed (aulicum, blossfeldia, calyptratum, glaucescens, morelianum, psittacinum, puniceum, reticulatum and striatum) I would like to trade if possible. I realize that the ones I have for trade are a bit common, but perhaps someone does not have those but does have a different species.

I guess I assumed that since there was talk on this forum of a special Hippeastrum forum that there must be a bunch of people growing Hippeastrum that post here, but perhaps most here grow the more easily obtainable hybrids from the commercial nurseries. Thanks for the tip though.....I'll give the plant exchange forum a whirl :o) Dan

I'm also after species seed, or bulbs if in Australia, I'm in Adelaide. I already have Papillio, Mandonii, Reticulatum, Cybister-Bogota, Cybister-Sumatra, Equstre, Worsleya Rayneri and Griffinia Liboniana. Would love more of the above or anything else, Cheers.

Is this a species Hippeastrum?

It is an amaryliid, you have well concluded that from its overall appearance. However it is a member of another genus namely one blood lily Haemanthus (although this particular sort generates umbels of white blooms) Concluding from feasability I would guss that yours is one H.albiflos, because this species is particularly widespread - although the leaves of your specimen appear a little bit very stunted. By my limited experience seeds from Mauro Peixoto, Brazil, germinate incredibly well and produce healthy and vigorous seedlings. I highly recommend Mauro. I have some seeds from him at the moment, just waiting to be sown - or floated, I prefer the floating method, and I wouldn't necessarily need them all... but it depends on which species you are after of course. Growing hippeastrum from seed is incredibly fascinating!

That is a nice list of Hippeastrum species and hybrids.

I have recently become interested in Hippeastrum species, and would like to collect some of the species in the future, although for the time being, unfortunately I do not have anything to offer in exchange.

Although in the future I would be interested in trading once I have something to offer in return.

Hi Creeping Fig,

I've been lucky in that I've found a very good colleague in India that is interested in propagating species via TC and they actually routinely put seed straight into TC. We are working together to try and make these species more routinely available and so I am doing my best to gather together an exciting collection of these beauties that I can either directly send to India or get seed on and then send the seed to India. With the help of some GW friends I'm happy to say that all of my species from seed have now put up second leaves so I'm gaining confidence in the fact that they will do nicely through the winter for me and in 3 years I will have some really exciting flowers to show. I know that many people would like to use these in hybridizing programs, but I'd hate to see such wonderful genes messed up by the hybridizers...not a typical sentiment I know!! It's great to know that there is work being done in India to propagate the species and make them more available.

Please keep us updated on your work from time to time. It's very interesting.
