Grow Bag - Potatoes -- anyone??

Hello all,

Just got my WormWay catalog and looking at their 20 gallon grow bags. These are white outside and black inside - not the porous kind sold by Gardner's Supply. This grow bag could be rolled down for starters and unrolled as the plants grow and more soil is added.

If you have grown white potatoes in a grow bag please post your experience. Please don't tell me you have heard someone did it -- I would like to hear about personal experience and comments from the actual grower/gardener. I am in Virginia zone 7.

Have you considered simply growing your plants in bags of topsoil? It's a cheaper way to go. Just stand the bags on one end, remove excess soil, punch holes at the bottom for drainage, add your potato seeds and as they grow add more soil until the plant reaches the top of the bag. Here's a link but it shows the bags laying on the sides.

Wow! I looked up those bags, and what a great idea! I have 120 cuttings of which I'll be lucky if 30 of them grow into plants, but I was worried about the expense of containers. Thanks for the mention of those grow bags! I am a huge believer in air pruning, but I'm sure I can vent those bags with a hammer and a nail punched gazillions of times!

Also, that was a great idea about the bags of topsoil!

Sorry I don't grow potatoes, so can't help you there. I just appreciate your mention of that gardening site and those bags!

I planted shortly after last frost... early May. They grew for about 3 months. I dumped 2 of 3 bags so far and had half a dozen 1 inch diameter potatoes in one bag. The other was completely empty. The third is still alive.

Likewise I have never planted sweet potatoes in a container or bags. But have seen pictures of those who have and they just let the vines spread out over them and down to the ground. And from the reports I've read they produce well. Production is very hard to predict. Weather conditions can cause production to change a lot. The same varieties I dug up to nine pounds in 010 from didn't produce a pound after the hail and the hot, droughty summer last year. And the one I planted in mid July produced several tubers but none as large as the one they were produced from. I would say the most I dug last season was around 5 pounds. The same variety that produced nine pounds the year before. So very hard to predict. And then again growing in a bag, container may affect production also. Jay

It's a little deep but the odds are they will make it up. I normally trench mine in 8" deep but only cover them with a couple of inches of soil and then build it up as they come up through. Main thing is don't over-crowd the containers. So depend ing on how many you added you may want to remove a few of them if you can get to them easily. Dave
