'Emelia's Italian Pole Bean' a.k.a. 'Auntie Vi'
Comments (13)I think I've found a little more information on this bean, I found an Italian land race named Billo. The information on this one... Origin: Cuneo province Italian Region: Piemont Consumption form: Dry Seed Growth Habit: Climbing Seed Colour: Light brown (Violet) Type of seed coat pattern: Striped Seed Shape: Oval 100 seed weight (g): 77 Note: The cultivation of this ecotypes started in the 1950's when seeds from Lamon (see Veneto regions) were introduced in the Cuneo province. Emilia's Italian (we use it as a snap bean) Billo is from the Veneto region in Italy and the Province of Udine (where Emilia's Italian came from) is in the white bit to the right. The cultivation of Billo started in the 1950's whereas the bean I named Emilia's Italian came over to Canada in 1911. Billo is the closest match I could find to my Emelia's so if not the same bean I do think they are related.I think I have finally quenched my curiosity on this one :). Comments (16)I still haven't anymore information on this bean but last night I saw the gal who gave me the beans and she's going to see if she can find out who exactly who brought them over to this county, when they arrived here and what part of Yugoslavia they came from. She then handed me a packet of beans she found at the seed exchange table at our garden club, this one is from Japan the name on the packet says Nagatomo White Bean... A heirloom bean from Iwaki Japan. Suitable to cool area. Very prolific. Good for green and dry. The packet also says they were produced in '98 so the seed is pretty old, how much luck I'll have with them germinating we'll have to wait and see. The only thing is I don't know if it's a pole or a green bean. The packet also has the address and phone number of a Japanese Farm in Victoria where these beans came from so maybe I can find more information by contacting them. Comments (6)Peterpotato, I see from your bio that you're in the 'hood. I got my seeds from a neighbor as well, the same passed-down story, and I've been growing it now for 10 years, its far and away my favorite bean. Seed Savers Exchange had someone offering seeds some years ago from Cortez. I've done my best to send seeds to other bean connoisseurs, and they all think highly of it. Why, just yesterday I got an email from some guy who was snarfing away at 'em! They also can well, and make great dilly beans. Re growing it, I plant seed in early June, and then again in early July, and the later catches up with the earlier. It's most important not to let the soil dry out - then they get tough in a hurry. If you can keep the soil moist, they stay tender until they're a foot long, seeds are formed, and the pod is starting to turn yellow - at least 2 weeks hanging there, pick-able and edible. They get hit with what I *think* is curly top virus, so plant plenty. Once they get hit, the plant doesn't do all that well. Selling at the market, you'll notice folks who know the bean will clean you out. Enjoy!...See MoreTrue Heirloom Romano Pole Beans
Comments (17)Ah, are the three of us are looking for the exact same thing? How great to have company in the search! I have made some progress in finding more "Romano" varieties! SeedSavers.org is an organization that allows individuals who save seed varieties to make them available to those who ask. I searched for "Romano,", and I've found a few contenders which I am going to try out!.... 1) Romano II Italian Pole Bean https://exchange.seedsavers.org/page/variety/id/126981 I've corresponded with Nickie, and she says these are shiny beige-seeded ones with a white eye. She describes them as "meaty and delicious" at both the medium and over-grown stage. She is eager to share the variety, and will send them (free!) to anyone who will grow them, convinced that once you try them you will love them. 2) Romano Pole Bean https://exchange.seedsavers.org/page/listing/id/6699.45411 "60 days, tall vines produce wide flat large pods with a wonderful nutty flavor, very quick cooking, best when steamed for 1-2 minutes, light brown seed" --This one gave me problems when I went to pay via PayPal, so I am following instructions to pay by check. 3) "Romano Brown Seeded" https://exchange.seedsavers.org/page/variety/id/45416 No real description, but the brown color sounds promising to me, so I'm excited about this one! There may be more results, but I stopped looking after the above three. Here's the search that I found most results from: https://exchange.seedsavers.org/page/catalog/search/variety?keyword=romano I've also posted in the Seed exchange area on this forum asking if anyone has any Romano Pole beans with brown seeds. So far no reply. Unfortunately the seed lists are not searchable, so it's a pretty inefficient seed trading system. I did find one "Romano Pole Bean," but I'm not trying it because it's a variegated seed (different looking) and there was no description about taste or tenderness. I ordered already the SuperMarconi from GrowItalian.com , I'm sorry to hear it was a dud! I also ordered their "Smeraldo," https://www.growitalian.com/bean-smeraldo-57-45/ which, it turns out, is white seeded. Did you try that one yet, fignut or tigereye?...See Moreaftermidnight Zone7b B.C. Canada
