Rose for pots
Comments (14)I grow all 40 of my roses in pots and have for years, and it's not that hard. The keys are having big enough pots so that the plants don't get too root-bound, sticking with varieties that won't outgrow the space, making sure the plants are well-drained and in good quality soil, and of course Water Water Water. I water daily during our long summer. It's a quick routine and it makes all the difference. Unlike roseleaf, I would NEVER use a tray under a rose. It works for roseleaf, but it means you have to watch like a hawk to be careful not to overwater. I don't have time to monitor that closely. Rose roots die quickly if they stay in standing water. Even a couple of days can do it. If your drainage is very good, it's hard to over-water roses. One last thing: if you have a choice, use own-root roses for pots rather than grafted. Rootstocks tend to sprawl, especially Dr. Huey, the dominent roostock in the West. Own-root roses vary, but in general they tend to be happier in a confined space of a pot than do their grafted counterparts. If I can't find a rose variety on its own roots, I'll buy the grafted and figure on replacing it with a rooted cutting after 3 years or so. Mike...See MoreAV trailer in a bonsai pot?
Comments (11)Thanks for the positive feedback. I've got a closet full of nice bonsai pots from tiny to huge. They're left over from upwardly mobile trees to failures that ended in the compost pile. Soooo -- tomorrow I'll get to work. My first choice is a terra cota pot that''s 5" x 7.5" x 1.75". I have one smaller that's glazed on the outside; it might not dry out so fast. We'll see. I'll post a picture soon. Can't wait. Krys...See Morepomegranate or fig for a pot?
Comments (7)A fig would do well in your pot. Some of the smallish varieties I would recommend are Celeste, Black Jack, Violette De Bordeaux. I have figs in pots and they are healthy and produce good fruit. However, you may have to prune the roots every few years. Removing a large plant from a terra cota pot may be tricky and unforgiving (may break). A pomegranite may work in your pot also. I believe some ornamental types are dwarfs. Maybe someone else has experience with this potted fruit tree....See MorePots
Comments (3)I go from 3 oz solo cup - which is about 3 cents a piece - set of 100 in Kroeger - to 3oz plastic - and up. Check ebay - kathystrep (Kathy Spissman, love her) sells 50 3oz plastic for $6. She also has a box of used pots of all sizes for 4.99. The best pots for Streptocarpus - Oyama pots. I....See Moretapla (mid-Michigan, USDA z5b-6a)
