Dan, I dunno--I get SO excited watching the little seedlings emerge. You sure wouldn't call me patient as I chatter in a high, excited voice, exhorting my "babies" to grow big and strong... A lot of what I grow from seed is stuff I can't find any other way, and even finding the seed isn't particularly easy. I have to admit that there isn't any *instant* gratification with a lot of the seeds I start--some take up to two or three years to show an above-ground leaf, but I do derive some smug satisfaction at being able to get them to grow at all, especially after people proud of their seed starting abilities (usually tomatoes) don't think about or bother with cold stratification and fail rather miserably. I also enjoy watching tiny plantlings (whether I started them from seed myself, or bought tubes, bare-root stock, bulbs or rooted cuttings) slowly become big, splendid plants. I've been on a tear lately, getting all sorts of plants I've wanted: neon pothos variegated philodendron chordatum 'black gold' sansevieria a lithops wandering jew- i didn't know how 'retro' these plants look. these and the sans make me feel i'm back in the forties. i have to start getting selective, because i'm running out of room. if i had all the space in the world, I'd get: monstera delisiosa african mask plant- i find these guys stunning, but just no room! I would like to get a fern of some type, but i don't know which would do best in my office.

The problem you will find with most of the plants you mention is they will either have short-viable seeds, or the seeds will establish double dormancy if allowed to dry so they are best sown very fresh. You can use the winter sowing method, but should sow right when seeds would ripen on the plant in your area....many of those you mention when left outdoors will then germinate the following Spring. Example, I've sown trillium seeds and had them germinate in Spring, but sown the same day they are collected - mid-July here. Jeffersonia, Thalictrum thalictroides (aka anemonella thalictroides) germinate reliably, but only when sown freshly harvested. To do that, you need to find a trader who will send you fresh seeds, find a seed company who sends seeds moist packed, or what I often find easiest - buy one plant, harvest the seeds when ripe and go from there.

What can I plant that is deer resistant? This list of deer resistant plants was compiled from Gardenweb postings and other sources. As you can see from the follow-up postings at the bottom of the list, RESISTANT is the key word. Deer can be quite the gourmets and yours may still be partial to some of the plants on this list. Deer that are hungry enough will eat everything bare from the ground up into the trees as high as they can reach. Many of the plants on this list are poisonous or medicinal. If a plant smells bad to you when you crush the leaf or stem, it probably smells just as bad to the deer. (P.S. Don't forget that rabbits, squirrels, groundhogs and other animals might be just as destructive as deer in your garden.) I was all ready to quibble and say that I thought Four-O'clocks were Mirabilis, not Clarkia, when I saw you'd got Mirabilis listed as Four-oclocks under annuals. The joy of common names! Have you ever grown clarkia? I understand they do OK here and are really attractive in part-shade. They also devoured a barberry, and hostas are out of the question. One day last winter we looked out our window and saw a doe eating birdseed out of one of our bird feeders! What's tasty is apparently a regional issue, also, so you might try checking your local (in my case, Maryland Cooperative Extension's Web site) extension service for a list of plants that are "deer candy" or avoided by deer in your area. I've had them nibble on Japanese white spiraea (Spiraea albiflora) and the usual tulip and hosta foliage. They prefer my neighbors grass. She has it professionally taken care of every week. I wish she would stop. Our yards are attached and they wander up this way frequently. Moved from California to Virginia last year, so much to learn! Deer are different in different areas. For example mule deer in CA usually won't touch impatiens, but white tail in VA LOVE it. I spent a lot of money to fence in my back yard. The only sure way. (I hope) Also, they won't eat my iris, but they eat certain daylilies, but not others.
