Bulbs coming up now? O_o

My recently planted muscari and Inball Paperwhites are both coming up now. I know it's typical of muscari to have foliage in fall -so I hear- but I don't know anything about these paperwhites. I don't even know if it was a great idea planting them outdoors, though I've heard you can do so in warm regions. >_Should I be worried?

Ah! Nevermind, I found a post much further down about this. Wish I would have found it before. Heh.

Though if you do know anything about these inball paperwhites I'd still like to it:)

I have paperwhites (not Inball, never heard of that one) already in bloom and will have other varieties that bloom successively through the winter. They're great.

They will be fine! My daffodils and crocuses are sticking up about a half inch. They usually do that and then stay that way until spring. I have had bulbs flower and get covered by a late snow and it doesn't bother them. Also lots of perennials have ground-level leaf rosettes this time of year while others prefer to go completely dormant.

I have dug up dahlia bulbs late. I kept waiting for them to go dormant and they just never did! One day, it got really, really cold and the ground froze in a short period of time (surface). It was difficult to dig them up and they all "worked" the next year. People are tempting me to attempt to get my dahlia tubers through the winter outside. I am going to heavily mulch them. They are also planted next to the foundation of the house. I have one dahlia that comes back every year without being dug up. It is a high risk project though. I would think that your dahlias are fine.

My experience is that if you got foliage first, you won't get flowers this year. And when I've dug mine up to share, it took a year or two to get flowers. Also, there is no rhyme or reason as to why they bloom some years and not others although once they start, you'll get blooms almost every year. The best thing to do is just ignore them and let them surprise you next year. Most of mine bloomed, but not all of them. I know your frustration. I look forward to seeing them every year and when I only get foliage, I get really bummed.

When did you covered your plantings "with lots of dead leaves", in the fall? If so, it is the reason for them to sprout too early. The mulch kept the soil warmer than it could be otherwise, confusing the plants. Lilies are super hardy in zone 7 and don't need protection from cold. They will appreciate some mulching as means of indirect feeding (food for the soil organisms that produce nutrients for plants), however mulch as protection from cold, especially in your zone, has a potential to do more harm than good. Covering the sprouts with cardboard now could only finish the destruction.

I've never heard of them either. The site I ordered from says...

A slightly shorter paperwhite cultivar, Inball is known for blooms that tend to hold a day or two longer than the norm, and stiff stems don't tend to flop under the weight of full flower trusses. Inball is also considered by many to have the sweetest fragrance, noticeably less musky than traditional paperwhites. (Of course, every nose is different.) While Inball takes an additional 6 to 7 days to bloom initially, this makes it ideal for providing a long season of blossoms.

Zones 8-10, anywhere for indoor bloom
Bloom Time:
4-5 weeksfrom planting date indoors, Feb-March outdoors

I guess they just got too hot. It's been so warm.
