Has anyone tried Montreal Market Nutmeg melon?

It's sold by John Scheepers Kitchen Garden Seeds, located in Connecticut, which looks like a relatively small operation. Their catalogue and website have sketches not photos. Have you heard anything negative about the company? I'm pretty sure I ordered lettuce seeds from them a couple of years ago, and they were just fine with price, shipping, and quick delivery.

Back again! A 19th century heirloom, the prized Montreal Market Nutmeg, AKA the Queen of Melons, was raised exclusively in the Montreal area. King Edward VIIÂs favorite melon, the yields can be up to 15 pound (but usually are smaller), round, netted, deeply ribbed fruits with a thin rind and flattened ends. Its light green flesh has a superb texture and melts in your mouth with an ethereal, spicy sweet taste reminiscent of nutmeg. The first taste illicits an involuntary, yummy-swooning expression in reaction to its exquisite perfection. (OP.)

I haven't tried the melon (sounds good!), but according to Dave's Garden Watchdog, the company is reviewed highly. All 21 people reviewing it said they had a positive experience. I have not used them personally

You can check out garden companies at the site. It's a great resource and can help you avoid ordering from poor seed companies. Google Dave's Garden Watchdog and you'll see the link. I'd link it here, but as it is technically another garden forum, I'm not sure if that would be OK.

Nope. It was listed in Burpees 1888 catalogue which ran a contest for the largest melon. Largest was growned by a fellow in Iowa who submitted one at 39.5 lbs. There were a lot of Nutmeg ( green fleshed) muskmelons in those days. I have tried a few of them like Jenny Lind and giant melons like Old Time Tennessee. There is a reason why they faded out of the picture. They are not very good compared to modern melons.

I also obtained seed from Windmill Point several years ago. They grew well for me in Wisconsin with no special care, and set large green-fleshed melons. It was a stretch for them to ripen, only half made it. They were tasty, and I wanted to save seed. Unfortunately, that was the same year a _professional vendor_ (!!!) sold me a "long cucumber" that turned out to be "Armenian cucumber", which contaminated my Montreal. When I tried to obtain fresh seed, Windmill Point said they could no longer ship to U.S. If your crop does well, Lagang, I hope to exchange seed for some.

I agree with little minnie. The diseases you mention are all associated with humidity and air circulation. I do interplant to increase production in an area, but it is with things that will not increase humidity directly around a plant. For instance I grow lettuce with the tomatoes until the tomatoes are too big and make too much shade. The lettuce is low enough not to increase humidity around the tomato leaves. The thing I have found that helps most with the diseases mentioned is increasing spacing between plants, pruning excess leaves at the bottom of plants, and being sure that there is good air flow around plants, whether in teh high tunnel or outside. I have no experience with Sonder but wanted to update my airbnb experiences following an inquiry I made here about them. Years ago, when they were relatively new, we tried a couple and were deeply disappointed. I asked for opinions about them maybe a year ago and because of the positive experiences, we dipped our toes back in the water. The first was at Christmas in Mexico with DD and DSIL. I cannot begin to tell you how much we loved it! Everything was absolutely perfect and far exceeded our expectations. So often we are on the go-go-go when on vacation but this place was so comfortable and lovely that we found ourselves very happy to spend some days there hanging by the pool, playing games on the large veranda overlooking the pool and water, grilling and drinking margs outdoors. It was very, very special and we would return in a heartbeat. "Superhost" designated. The second experience was in D.C. a couple of months ago where our first nightmare ventures into airbnb began. Our primary requirement was that it would be walking distance to our kids' home of which there aren't a lot of options. A "superhost" designated apt. was available with stellar reviews. We LOVED it, too. Nothing fancy or extravagant but so nicely decorated, lwell appointed, ight and bright, good sheets and bed, thoughtful snacks and pantry items, and it could not have been cleaner. The owners live upstairs. We had a reservation for May but unfortunately just canceled it, hoping to reschedule soon. Last thing. We also almost always stay in smaller boutique hotels and nicer bnb's. There have been SO many memorable ones. The breakfasts are almost always wonderful and satiate us well into the afternoon. So many interesting conversations occur at these breakfasts. DH is the one who enjoys researching and booking our trips and accommodations. Before booking he used to always ask me to take a look. I would veto many based on decor, lack of light, bathroom in the wrong location, yada, yada. But, wow, have to say he's gotten GOOD! Usually his options are all very acceptable but I still need to look them over because he may still throw in a zinger now and then! ;) Anyway, I appreciate the encouragement I received to try airbnb again!

I tried the "Montreal" melon about 10 years ago, received it mail order from a company in Canada. Melons as a rule do poorly here; too little heat in Summer, and too short a season. "Montreal", however, managed to ripen a few... and that was direct seeded, transplants would have done better. They are pretty large, and the vines produce a good set; but the green flesh is not as thick as we are used to. Good flavor, though.

It was my intent to save seed, but I grew a mis-labeled cucumber that year which turned out to be Armenian cucumber... which is a melon, and will cross with "Montreal". They were directly adjacent, so the seed from both could not be saved. :-( When I tried to order more the next year, the supplier said they could no longer ship to the U.S.

Good as I thought it was, that description by KGS is a little over the top, IMO. I wouldn't mind growing it again, so I may order some seed as well.

Your post reminds me of my absolute ignorance about what in the cucurbit family will cross-pollinate and what won't.

Below is a linked chart showing what cucurbits cross-pollinate with others, published by Purdue Univ., and I think it's extremely confusing! But maybe it will be helpful to anyone who's interested because they want to save seeds of OP plants.
