ANOTHER question re: tulip Little Beauty in my front lawn

I saw that someone had a question about planting species/botanical tulip Little Beauty. I have 100 coming from Van Engelen in a few days. Is it too early to plant (it has been unseasonably warm 70-80). Can I just dig individual holes in my lawn about 6-7 inches deep and plant? The info on Van Engelen site said to plant them 7 inches deep and 12 INCHES APART! Does that mean each individual bulb has to be spaced that far apart?!! That sounds a little EXTREME to me!! I was envisioning them being in groups of 4-8 with each bulb maybe a few inches from one another! Will they spread?

Do I REALLY have to amend my clay soil as I would when I plant my roses/lilies? Or can they just go into the bottom of each hole, with a little bulb food at the bottom?

I have some crocus planted in the yard as well, but not 100! They come up faithfully every year. I want to have a colorful front yard this spring! Oh, and is 6-7 inches deep enough to keep them from being dug up by squirrels?

Thanks! :0) Phyl
