Pull out annuals?
Comments (3)Victoria is a perennial, and behave that way in many parts of the country. In very cold climates, it's treated as an annual. We have some Victoria that has remained in situ for over 4 years. But your Profusion is an annual and can be removed whenever you have the time. I usually wait until the frost takes it out, because the bees, butterflies, and other pollinators seem to flock to anything blooming at this time of year. Annuals can be ripped out....herbaceous perennials should be cut back, leaving the roots in place....See MoreWhen do you WS your annuals?
Comments (20)I grow mammoth sunflowers along the outside of my fence every summer and I have volunteers come up all over the place in the spring. So I know the seed will winter over and wait till conditions are right to come up. It's funny that much of the time, the seeds I plant don't come up and then I find sunflowers coming up in my compost pile, or in my raised bed, or in the middle of my yard! Sometimes if it wasn't for the volunteers I wouldn't have sunflowers! This year I WS'd a few because I want a lot of them. Most of them are up already because it's warmer inside their bottle but they have weathered freezing temps so far. Germination also happens sooner with sunflowers if you soak the seed first to soften the shell. I will not set my little seedlings out till danger of frost is over, however. Same thing for marigolds and pansies. The others I'm not sure about....See MoreWhen do you Direct Sow your Annuals
Comments (3)In Nevada at about the same altitude and latitude as SLC I am doing some serious direct sowing this week. (I always start with a half dozen seed two to four weeks earlier. I have three sunflowers from a month ago that have survived several mornings of 30°F and one snow. Perhaps our only snow this year was about May 5th.)...See MoreHafele pull-out for oil etc - do you like yours?
Comments (5)Good questions! It looks like it's adjustable, but I'll need to check. It's definitely tall enough for oil bottles, buehl - that's one of the reasons I'm interested in it. It's 20" tall. Mindstorm, I like the look of yours but wonder if it's tall enough for oil. It doesn't look like it to me but I could be wrong...I also like the narrowness of the one I'm looking at - it's only 6" wide. Buehl, you make a good point about refrigeration. Truth is, most of my oils are in the fridge, and my nuts and pt butter - I heard that olive oil is okay at room temp so have always stored it that way, but investigating that is probably not a bad idea...since that's mostly what i use for cooking...i would also use the pull out it for flavored vinegars, cooking wines and sherries, , soy sauce, etc...which don't need refrigeration and which are currently in a mess on the counter, or in the cabinet. Happy Holidays to all, thanks for your advice as always - I'm guessing this site will be kind of quiet this week...now that I have time off and can delve into kitchen-ing! momor...See Moreoldroser
