Thorny plant for window box?

Hi, I'm trying to grow a thorny plant to keep people away from a window. Does anyone have a recommendation for one that will grow in a window box?

What size window box, and how big a plant? Is it in shade or full sun? Al

Pyrocanthus perhaps? How about a miniature hedge-apple planting?

soxxxx - you have a good idea. And after looking at the photos, I've grown so used to the odd window placement that I really see how it could be made to look much better. My brain is clicking again. Uh-oh. My uncle was a carpenter but did some strange things. On the back of the house (school),he merely dropped the ceilings down over the two tall windows of the half of the building he made livable. In other words he didn't cut them down or out, so the original windows are there but only the bottoms show inside. The tops are visible from the outside but are camouflaged. Hard to explain, so here is a pic, taken last Fall showing the two windows, the center one and the one on the far right. I'm actually very happy he didn't destroy them because I love the illusion plus who knows a future owner may decide to completely gut the house and restore it. You never know.

HJ I've had weired things happen to me too. I think your idea of a bird may be on target. I would try again, put some sort of netting across the window box that will deter the bird this time. Funny, I have a fake owl in the garden this year for the same reason. My son found the owl in someone's trash pile, brought it home and I have not had a problem with birds on my peaches or squirrels for that matter! Good luck MLCH

I will probably take them out in mid November and plant them in my cleaned up veggie garden until the spring. They are nice to fill in after a frost that kills off the annuals. Next will be Christmas greenery in the planter.

I guess a pretty standard sized window box, which might be small for a bush, but I was hoping for some miracles. A 36" standard window box. Full sun on a roof.

How about Berberis buxifolia 'NANA'. Gets about 18 inches high and plenty thorny. It is evergreen with yellow flowers. Al

Miniature roses might be an option! Thorny with lovely flowers and a scent, in some cases! Roses need lots of sun, at least 6 to 8 hours a day, so they would do fine in a full sun location. Some varieties are thornier than others, I'd assume, so choose one that fits your requirements of prickly! They also come in different sizes of miniature, from truly small to quite large as minis go, so I'm sure you could find one to fill the space required...
