Cut Tithonia - Mexican Sunflower wilt?
Comments (4)Chris, I was hoping someone would answer this because I'd like to know too! I grew tithonia last year, and only cut a few blooms for bouquets, but they wilted soon. (This year I didn't have luck with germination, so I didn't get to try again - they are not perennial here, so I have to start all over again each year. Lucky you with a 4-yr-old plant!). I linking to a page from a Google search. Seems this might be one of those cutflowers where you have to sear the stem. I'm going to try again next spring. Good luck! :) Dee Here is a link that might be useful: tithonia as a cutflower - google search...See MoreLife expectancy of mexican sunflower?
Comments (6)Mexican sunflower is an annual. You might be able to extend its life by deadheading faded blossoms. When your plants are starting to look worn, be sure to let them produce some seed. Here in Houston I grow at least three crops a year. Butterflies find the nectar very attractive. Don't crowd them, and they may not get so rank. Also, nip the apical bud to encourage branching once the seedling is about 18 inches tall....See MoreWANTED: Have: Tithonia diversifolia - Giant Mexican Sunflower

Comments (11)My tree varieties have grown to be giants - as tall as the power lines that run over head by the road . They have always bloomed in October or November but are beginning to bloom now . Strange . I'm not sure you could kill these even if you wanted to . My cows adore them and keep the plants by the pasture fences trimmed . The plants still bloom . These plants are almost close to invasive except that any that are planted are my own fault . I had NO idea they would become such giants . They get bigger every year . They certainly are a show stopper when they all bloom . I think I have about 25 planted along the roadway and fences and you can see their bright yellow blooms for miles away . If you need a cutting - I have a few tons available !...See MoreJoeray
