Did I plant too deep?

I FINALLY got my flower bed put in yesterday. I may have planted a tad too deep. Not by much. Maybe 2 or 3 inches further than I should have. Will this ruin my flowers?

After I added my mulch, it just seemed like too much.

Tulips and all sorts of other bulbs. Most required a 6" or 8" hole.

one of the reasons i am leery of fertilizing too late in the summer ... if the plant was growing too lushly, instead of slowing down in fall ... it can lead to rotting of the crown ... though crown rot is usually a specific mid to late summer issue ... its rot.. just a different rot ... did you fert??? otherwise.. some hosta just hate you .. and gratuitously die ... ken

If the bulbs were 2 to 3 inches in size they should be at about the right depth. Give them time, they need to establish roots. If the bulbs were tiny babies they may be too deep.

A scorched look in a recently planted tree means the *original* rootball is short of water. The Tree-gator should help if the *original* rootball is moist. Put a finger in it to check. If it was a large boxed tree, the 5 gallon a day may be insufficient. Test the rootball with a finger. That said, if the hole wasn't premoistened before planting -- I fill with water and let drain, then repeat -- the water is moving into the surrounding soil instead of the rootball. Beyond that sufficient water to the *original* rootball, you could also rig temporary shade. Oh yes. Forget the so-called shock preventer. You're wasting money. Adequate water to the *original* rootball is the issue.

Early last spring, I did a major division of the daylilys that were in the same bed as my peony. I must have gotten too close to the peony when I was digging b/c when the peony came up in the spring and put out its buds they never bloomed. Just like you, the plant looked wonderful with many buds but they never flowered. In July I removed the dead buds and otherwise I left the plant alone. This spring it is back to normal. The blooms were gorgeous! Unfortunately the heat wave hit us and instead of a 2 week show, I had a 2 day show. SO I have to agree with Amulet.... give it time to adjust :)

When it comes to tulips, the deeper, the better. They will tend to perennialize better if planted deeply. It won't hurt daffodils, either. Relax and enjoy your blooms next spring!

I planted my bulbs, especially daffodils quite deeply, sometimes as deep as 1ft. That way, I can fit in a lot of other bulbs above them. Never have any problem with them not coming up.

I'm jealous -- I can never plant too deeply! My clay soil is tough enough to dig 6 inches down, and then I hit rock in most places! I think that's one reason my tulips have never been terribly successful. Be glad you can go that deep.

Hey, Birdwatcher, where in PA do you live that you got 6" of snow? Just wondering. We haven't even had frost yet here in SE PA.
