Planting bulbs under my dogwood trees

I have about 300 poeticus narcissi that I was planning on planting under my three dogwoods since they would be blooming at about the same time and I think the effect would be quite nice. The dogwoods are mature trees in the lawn and I already tried digging about six feet from the trunk but the roots from the trees are too numerous and I don't want to damage them. I saw that someone suggested just throwing the bulbs around for an unplanned look (which is what I'm after) and then covering the area with newspapers and thick mulch. Do you think that would work in my situation? or would I just kill the trees. Also, how deep a mulch should I put down? I thought dafs had to be about 6" in the ground.
