Modifying self-watering containers?

This will be my second year growing vegetables in self-watering containers. I'm feeling like I might want to make some drainage modifications so the soil isn't too wet. I have the windowboxes from Gardener's, for example (for greens and radishes), and am thinking of drilling some drainage holes right above the reservoir. This way, if the soil is wet and the reserve is full (like from a lot of rain), then the extra water can drain out of the soil. Is there a flaw in this idea? I did this last fall when I planted some last-minute perennials in one of Gardener's "large" self-waterers. Water really spilled out of those holes after a rain. The reservoir overflow holes (which I can't seem to find on the windowboxes) don't seem to quite do the trick, since if the reserve is full, and the soil is full, nothing drains--the water just sits there.

Has anyone else done this? Is there something I'm not "getting" about these containers? BTW, I do use a well-draining soilless mix.
