Comments (2)I planted three types last year rice pea texas longhorn california califonia could not take the heat. rice peas did great, but peas so small so I won't plant them again. I loved Texas longhorn - they are large peas, maroon in color. They taste like boiled peanuts. They only take about 8 pods enough for one to have southern peas for dinner. They did great with all that heat last summer. I did water a lot though. This did not help the California peas though. They are very viney (5-7') and take 90 days to green stage. It could be that the extreme heat of last summer made them mature slower? I loved them. My garden may have needed more water since it is a new no till garden and worms have not had enough time to do my tilling for me. Hummus is much thicker this year, but now we have too much rain. I read Texas longhorn are similar if not the same as big red ripper, which should be easier to locate....See MoreWhat's eating my black eyed peas?
Comments (5)"The plants look perfect except for the peas being eaten from the pod, with some shriveling." Do you mean that the pods have been opened, and the seeds removed? Was the pod chewed open? Voles are a frequent culprit here, they will harvest the seeds of legumes as they begin to ripen. For the most part, they prefer to harvest seeds close to the ground, often pulling plants down; but they can climb as well. Last year they climbed the trellis to harvest seeds from my yardlongs... they must have been hanging from the pods as they did so. I put a few rat traps out, which put an end to their pilfering....See MoreBlack eyed pea/Bisbee Red
Comments (5)We ate our first mess the other evening and they are a full, meaty pea somewhat between the crowder and purple hull in taste. Production is the highest I've had of any pea. A short 12 foot row is out producing a 24 foot row of the purple hull. The pods turn a purple red simular to the purple hull. The pea juice was a dark brown with a redish caste. The pea turns dark brown when cooked. They are a keeper....See MoreSouthern pea pods covered with black bug eggs?
Comments (7)Thanks again for the information on aphids. This is the first year I've actually seen this kind of aphid attack and also my first experience with southern peas. Early on, I thought what I was seeing was some form of pollen on the pea pods. Fortunately the infestation is limited to one fairly small area. I'm slowly learning about pests and the challenges of organic gardening. This spring, I was religious about taking a bucket of soapy water out every morning to drown cucumber beetles, which were a problem last year. As a result, I had a beautiful cucumber crop. This year my lesson is don't plant sweet potatoes and Seminole pumpkin too close together.... and watch for aphids! :) Here's a video of my garden, if you're interested. Hate to say it's become something of a jungle in the past few weeks. Here is a link that might be useful: Video walk through my garden...See More- 14 years ago
